Tattoo'd man not to get into the army

This story was just briefed in the news on the tele, but it's not yet posted on the CNN website. I happened to be passing by the tele on my way to a smoke when the reporter caught my attention.

Apparantly, a young man whose parents moved to the US from Russia before he was born cannot get into the army because he has two half sleeves. He went through all the procedures, and the day they were supposed to ship him out (to basic training I'm guessing) they sent him home on accounts of his tattoo's.

The guy has two half sleeves, one is symbols of earth/wind/fire/water, and the other is a spider web going from his wrist to elbow. The regulations of the army state nothing about tatttoo's other than if they are racist or indecent, you cannot be allowed into the army. Neither of them were racist, or indecent, and both are covered by the army uniform. He was told that because they covered over 75% of his limb he can't be in the army, but he should try for the National Guard. Anyone who looked at the guy would see they are half sleeves.

When we're leaving people in Iraq for triple the amount of stay that they were supposed to be there, and we're pulling out the reserves, maybe the US shouldn't be so unwilling to let in a man who is ready to die for his country on account that he has tattoo's?

I'll provide the link when it becomes available.

Tattoos can identify you if you are used for covert operations.

Like when a cop asks you "Did the assailant have any marks or tattoos?"

You can't obviously be covert if you have a spiderweb tattoed to your arm from elbow to wrist. If you're gonna look like one of the locals that won't help you blend in.

Also the STYLE of the tattoo will give you away as far as what country you might be from.

Soviet/Russian jailhouse tattoos are way different in style to American jailhouse tats. Same thing with West coast and East coast tats.

Any other tattoos on this person's hands or neck or face as well which would disqualify him or just the forearms?

That doesn't make any sense in the least. Everyone I know in the army (and I know quite a few people) has tattoo's. The rules and regulations state nothing of the sort. They simply say that you cannot enter into the army with racist or indecent tattoo's which neither of his are. And he didn't get a Russian or Soviet tattoo. He has a spiderweb on one arm, and a picture of the wind, the sun, the earth, and fire on his other. Nothing offensive, and honestly, if they hadn't said what the picture was of, I would have had no clue. It just looked like blobs of colour to me.

Plus, The army suit covers the tattoo's. Your army uniform alone will give you away of where you are from. Tattoo's won't. Plus, everyone in any country has tattoo's now a days. The guy went to a regular tattoo parlour in America and got them done. Not everyone is going to go into covert, mostly everyone is in combat battle, and anyone that is in covert is selected based on their abilities, not on what the hell is on their arm.

What are your friends classifications (E-x)? that may have something to do with it. Or even what unit they want to be in.

If you want to be a SEAL, Ranger, Green Beret, e.g. I am sure they want your body to be devoid of any distinguishing marks. Or maybe the services lessened the restrictions on body art.

But think of it. If you can't get in the Service for having a racist tattoo why do they need you to go kill a person without it?

I'll call and find out later. It's kind of difficult considering we are all on different time zones.

This isn't the point though. The man they were talking about doesn't want any of those things. He just wants to fight for his country, regardless of his rank. He's dreamed about being in the army since being a kid. You should have seen this guys apartment, army stuff everywhere. He stated it in the interview I watched. This isn't a rank problem, this is blatant discrimination. Why did I use that word? Because they are blaming their decision on army protocols when the reason they gave isn't in the protocol. They have yet to give a real reason for not accepting this fellow into the army.
