And since he's playing out for the first time ever, I don't think he is capable of handling such a thing.
Remember that a dj has to satisfy the people he/she plays for, and if you do not satisfy the people you play for, people will think you suck as a dj, no matter if your mixing skills are great.
People don't care about the music you play, but as soon as you play the wrong music, they start complaining. You may not believe it, but it's true. A lot of people won't dance to a good song, but as soon as you play a song they dislike, they will come up to you and tell you to play something else.
IMHO, controlling a crowd is one of the hardest skills to master. It took me 1,5 years to learn it, and i'm still not there...
Making mistakes is ok, as long as you learn from them. Don't bother if you go wrong the first time, as long as you know what you've done wrong, and try to correct it next time.
