dilemma ...

spinning out for the first time ever ... besides a group of friends ... simple question ...ok, i'm a novice, so i slightly plan out a 2hour set of what i want to play, where i want the set to go, and all that ... i bring other records i love depending on vibe of crowd ... no my dilemma is :

Do I play what I love ?

Or do I play for the environment I'm spinning at (Lounge) .. and remember what types of people are at this place ???

Any critical input would be appreciated . . .

You are not playing for yourself, you are playing for the people who are at the venue at that time.

What makes a great dj, is that he/she can play what the crowd wants to hear, while maintaining his/her own style.

If you play at a Lounge, you can expect people who want to hear louge-music, and not hardstyle or something...

You can play some tunes you like, but try to keep them the same as what you are already playing.

If you are playing lounge and the crowd digs, and you suddenly drop a Marco V-track or something similar, you're going the wrong way...

I hope I made my point, I have a 'Bad-English-Day' today...

i suggest play'n what u love......A great dj IMHO plays his heart and that is exactly what people respond 2......i have been in lounges where guys where play'n "Under 4ver" By 16c+(three n one) and anyone who knows that track would say that far from a lounge track...i might ad the place went bananas i.e. people on tables, fist pumping etc=))

if u love and spin trance u shouldn't be spinning @ a lounge that the crowd expects house...u should pass the gig up....

Bring what you love to a party, but while packing your box remember what the venue is like (big/small, indoor/outdoor, summer/winter, trance scene or house etc). All these factors should be present when selecting your tunes for the night and once you get there just watch people's reactions to different elements of tunes. Give them what they want but not to excess, your set should always be flowing in terms of energy and should end with them wanting more

I'm with djxtension on this one.

At this level you have to remember that your being there is purely coincidental as people are not going to the party to see you but to party.

As I have said before, treat this more as an experience in DJing rather than a trance experience. Try and give them what they want and learn the dynamics of a crowd. If it's not a trance crowd you will just piss them off by playing it. Get known as them man who got the party started not the anal retentive who played his own stuff.

So many DJs make this mistake.

Most importantly have a good time with it even if it's not all what you like to hear.

Cheers
Nem

there is also the question of... does he have any lounge-friendly music? if not, my idea all along was for you to play more chilled out version of trance, take it easy, if the people are digging the melodies, then you can slowly try to bring them in to higher energy trance, be careful, and if it doesn't work, retreat and follow the original procedure. i wouldn't ban experimentation with the crowd, but only do this if you're confident you can handle it, and if you're quick enough and know how to correct things if they start to go sour...

And since he's playing out for the first time ever, I don't think he is capable of handling such a thing.

Remember that a dj has to satisfy the people he/she plays for, and if you do not satisfy the people you play for, people will think you suck as a dj, no matter if your mixing skills are great.

People don't care about the music you play, but as soon as you play the wrong music, they start complaining. You may not believe it, but it's true. A lot of people won't dance to a good song, but as soon as you play a song they dislike, they will come up to you and tell you to play something else.

IMHO, controlling a crowd is one of the hardest skills to master. It took me 1,5 years to learn it, and i'm still not there...

Making mistakes is ok, as long as you learn from them. Don't bother if you go wrong the first time, as long as you know what you've done wrong, and try to correct it next time.

Since he's playing for friends, and his name is still not Tiesto, he's not going to be God that night.

Play it safe.

bah, i spose your ultimately there to 'entertain' the crowd. but you are a trance dj i take it, being that your name is pvd fanatic. so if you wre hired to spin somethin other than what you love, trance, maybe that gig isnt for you. and if youre taking this gig for money, youre in the WRONG business, as its damn near impossible to make a living or a kind of money flow off music... so i say, play what you love, they will probably like it.

besides, if they dont know much about the music, they will sadly love or think anything you play is the 'kewlest', but if they are knowledgable about EDM then still, being that your a trance addict, you should 'roxxors' their 'soxors'? right? hah-
