Digidesign 001 recording

I looked around on the production forum and couldnt find a suitable answer, nor could I find one on here.

My DJ buddy uses a Digidesign 001 setup to record his mixes and they sound outstanding, so crisp and clean. He told me that a solid pre-amp like the 001 is one of the keys to a more professional sounding mix. I guess I'd be recording with Pro Tools.

Have any of you used a Digidesign setup to record your demos/mixes? I'd like to get some first hand expertise on the issue. Any thoughts would be great.

yes i have. its quite easy all you have to do is hook your mixer to the digi mixer

either 001 or 002 ( i used 002 ) and then set a channel up in protools. after that hit record and make sure when you plug the Rca cables in to your mixer that you dont do it in the master out or the booth out channels make sure that you use the "tape" channel. after that hit record on the mixer and go.

speak of the devil. i just purchased the digidesign mbox
not as nice as the 001 or 002 but still gets the job done

i haven't done any recording with it, seeing as i just installed it about an hour ago, but i was monitoring the output from protools and it sounded better than the input going through the mbox

Yea Digidesign Preamps and A/D converters are pretty sweet sounding.

But lets not forget that you need quality mixer outputs to match up to the same quality sound.

If you're new to ProTools, gimme a holler(pm) if you want and I can help ya out... I've used ProTools for almost everything it's good for.

One thing I should mention in this thread now is that THere's no sense in buying a 001, considering the price and abilities of the MBox or the 002Rack.

if it doesnt have tape output, it should have a REC (record) output. use that. stay off the booth and master outputs.

I don't quite understand what these boxes do. Can't the computer itself handle making the sound louder ?

Make sure to use a set of shielded balanced cables so that your sound is really crisp as well. The more signal you can get to the pre amp the better it will sound.
