Whats peoples thought on this...

I was wondering, if you want a track and you can't get it anywhere, not even on CD, do you think its ok to get a good copy from someone for you to use at home, and what could you do for being able to play this track in a club.
I ask this since there are afew tracks I want, and you can't buy them anywhere, I've contacted the labels and asked for a re-press, even if it costs hundreds, but I can't get it anywhere.

if you're actively looking for the vinyls i dont see whats wrong with using a copy of a song at home but i wouldn't play in a club or any place that you were going to get paid at. thats just me, some people might feel differently. question... if you're getting this good copy from someone, how did they get it? if its a friend of yours, try to buy it from them or borrow it when you want to play it out.

i'm not sure how the other members are going to respond to this , but

vinyl is the clearest sound you can get, but if your able to find out the kbps of any clear sounding vinyl then you can get source forge 6.0 and open the mp3 file and resave it as the same thing but with a higher quality. and it should sound ok on a club system, i'm kinda in the same boat as you are with the song i'm currently looking for (mario lopez the sound of nature plug'n'play remix)
so i might just have to burn it and get a cdj and use it like that.

dartman: I'm asking this, so if I can get a good copy, I know what I can do to play it out and about, believe me, I ain't looking to have it and not pay anything, the only label that had it, I offord them hundreds to make another copy and ship it to me, but they declined my offer, if I find it anywhere, you can bet your ass I'll buy it.

DJ Jem: I hear what your saying about the bitrate thing, it should work.

Oh and nobody should get annoyed by this post since like I said, I seem to not have any options on this, except browsing Ebay now and then for it.

IMO, if you _CAN'T_ get your hands on a copy to buy, then by all means, use it some other way. big names do it, why can't you? (yup, they do, PQM himself said when he produced "You Are Sleeping" and gave a CD-R to someone with it, suddenly, every DJ from the local jock to Paul Oakenfold was playing it, yet it had not been released)

i hear what you're saying. if i were you i would probably play the song on whatever format you have it on until you can find the vinyl. if you've offered the label alot of money for a copy and they declined, and you're still looking for the vinyl there is not much else you can do. play the song. even if you find the record you're looking for the artist isnt going to be making any more money when you buy it. the label doesnt want your money, what can you do? play the song. clean it up first if its an mp3.

out of curiosity, have you tried to contact the artist? they might be more inclined to hear your case/ work with you.

heres my thing if you cant find it at all then go for it a burn it and use it, i think that its better for the label to at least have their song played even if its not bought from them then it is for it to sit around without any body playing it, but if you have the means to buy the cd and are just to lazy do do it then go hump a frog

I could maybe try that, but its really a remix of a track that I want, so I think I would have to get ahold of the remixer.

_-MIl0: I don't seem to be able to get it on CD, so no humping frogs for me.

how would that make any difference... if you only have 192 kilobytes per second of music, and you resave it at 256kbs format, where is the extra 64 kilobytes of data going to come from? Its going to be the same quality, not anybetter... Its a simple law of compression. When you compress information, you LOSE info, which cannot be regained EVAR...

Ahahah that's great. I think you meant "Sound Forge" not "Source Forge" as sourceforge is an open-source community, and a big one at that. Since someone else has already addressed the obvious issue of re-encoding a file to a higher bitrate, I'll just leave this:

[AV-Cables> I know.
[AV-Cables> No, I have to re-tag them.
[AV-Cables> I just converted ALL my songs to 192kbps.
[AV-Cables> And the Smashing...LIVE! soundtrack to 320kbps.
[Frozen-Solid> uh....
[Frozen-Solid> converted from what...?
[AV-Cables> 128kbps

Technical issues aside, parhaps your biggest concern would be the Performing Rights Organizations. The laws say that the publishing companies are due royalties every time their work is performed. This includes music played in Clubs. I don't know how far they would go to enforce this.

The truth is, even if you play the track in the club every day for the next 10 years, it would cost more to go after you than the money the publishing company would be due. So.... "Turn it up"
