Dunno Dragging skelettons out of the closet

Hey aspiring trance producers... I am pondering the right and wrongs of dragging 70's or 80's music to breathe new life into them as trance choons. I was watching a certain movie few days ago, made in the 80's and the theme song had me just tingling with ideas - "Wow, that would be so wicked in the mix and could destroy a club, properly done".

So my dillema is - some bigname dj's (such as pvd) frown upon such remixes, the feeling seems to be "let the dead rest". However, after hearing "Blue Monday" in PvD's set at Spirit, I'm beginning to think that this man sounds like a hipo. (hipocrat, that is). Before that, in some other set he played "not tonight" by Depeche Mode, among other tunes that most likely had to be dusted off for hours.

So, what do you think - is there a market for 80's tunage? I have crapload of choons that I'd like to re-do and at least the sonic idea seems pretty solid. My only concern is if it's a proper thing to do...

What do you think?

i'm all for man

some of those songs from the 80's were killer, just, lets say, the engeneering aspect isn't exactly up to par with our current technology which is why they are so choon-ey.

The 80s rule n Blue monday is a total anthem in the house clubs in England, always goes down well. Not sure if you could mix it with trance tho.

I say go for it. I think the thing the big names frown upon is the fad that started growing with a lot of 80's remixes coming out all at once. It might be more of a challenge to make something original if you start froma really old song, but I think it can be done, EDM is all about putting sounds from all sorts of different times and places together to make something totaly new and original and amazing, I'd really like to hear some of that I think.

What do you guys think about remixing some classic 20's tunes into some good lounge chillout type music.

didn't moby do that already? I'm trying to find a niche here, c'mon.... Although that AvB mix of Take on Me does sound enticing... or how about this: Sasha's mix of "It's raining men"? I bet plenty of market could exist for that...

Yea he does that a lot with gospel and some other old songs from that area. The problem with Moby, is that all of his remixes sound the same. I bet he had a couple drum loops and a couple string loops and just uses the 4 combinations of them with the song. If you could make them into a house song like Gabin did with Doo Wop, that would be cool.
