Hi There,
Just got back from Austin & really liked it a lot. People seem really cool & I like all the independent food joints and stuff.

Now I am condidering a move there, what part of town would you guys consider checking out and any other pointers.

Thanks,
Zzyzx

Monkey Dancer 2 CRACK MONKEY!

Too much damn raptrash on 6th street!

Nuno's is the best place in Austin. They play trance music every Friday! Imagine that. If you do go downtown, Sky/Vue is your best bet. Though it has a small dancefloor, it's a nice club. Although, I don't always like the music they play.

For living, I love North Austin, especially around the Mopac area. I used to live in Round Rock, and I loved it there!

Austin is becoming rather densely popularted, and not exactly what it used to be. If you get a job, live by it! Traffic is horrible... but nothing compared to Houston.

For more on Nuno's, go to nunos.net! I'd post the flyer, but my site is down... damnit.

Sorry Hoyt, but south Austin rules!!!! Actuallty, I have lived here a VERY long time, as has my husband... and after living all around Austin, we find we prefer south. If we were just the 2 of us, we would live close to downtown, maybe around South Congress... great feel and lots going on. Really fun and funky shops too. Location is definately ruled by budget though... and Hoyt is right about living closer to your work, traffic is bad and the last thing you want to have to do is drive all the way across town during rush hour. There are some nice neighborhoods just north of downtown also... but with school just starting, it may be a bit harder to find something around campus. Please feel free to send me a PM or email... I don't mind if you have any questions... and we have lived a bit of everywhere, so I can give you an idea of what you are looking at maybe

heh, rememberence is referring to me. i'll be in vegas by sept 10/11th-ish.

i live in SW austin. very near 2 major highways. i'll give you what i know about austin and let you guage for yourself what you think it appropriate. first the geography:

the colorado river runs through austin (just 1 block shy south of downtown). there are jogging/biking trails that go all the way around (the river is dammed up and we call this body of water Town Lake). you can go canoeing, kayaking and skulling. they hold concerts next to Palmer Auditorium which is right in front of Town Lake. Zilker Park (more concerts, soccer tourny's, volleyball, swimming etc) is just a hop skip and a jump away. so the river pretty much divides central from south. Mopac is a major highway that divides central from west and I35 divides central from east. the University of Texas campus pretty much separates central from north (it's just north of downtown).

central - downtown austin is very cool place to be for many different reasons. good luck though in finding a place down there . very expensive and the list is long. clarksville (a part of downtown austin between lamar and mopac) is a pretty cool place to live if you don't mind older southern homes. quiet neighborhoods etc.

SOUTH

southeast - do not move here unless you are interested in a very newly developed poor-ish neighborhood. there are some new apartment complexes opening up that are cool for now....for now. all the newer stuff pops up the further south you go (of course).

southcentral - old school south austin - i don't think you want to live here either. if you have the money you'll want to live somewhere else, BUT there are lots of cool "hole in the wall" restaurants and bars here. ruta maya's, the south congress cafe's, strip clubs, etc etc.

southwest - in my humble opinion, the gem of austin. it's in the hill country, or just right next to it. you're near a few shopping centers, a few grocery stores, a few gyms, lots of apartment complexes (fairly new), lots of chain restaurants and a few local shops, a mall, a few theaters, some hike and bike trails, beautiful sunsets, volleyball courts, disc golf courses. i can speak very highly of this area.

westside - aka westlake - unless you have lots of money and lots of clout, do not live here. enough said.

eastside - do i really even have to describe this area? it used to be that latin's live between the river and 15th street and as soon as you cross over to 16th street then you get into african american's. i do not recommend anything east of i35 unless you live about 15-20 miles away in which you may be near some farm land.

northwest - another gem - pretty much like the southwest in look and feel. lots of shopping, lots of stuff to do outdoors. i have never lived here but the apartments tend to be a bit nicer and the further nw you live, the more expensive it gets.

north - round rock - Dell, Inc. - suburbia - enough said. lots of shopping, cheaper rent, lots of fucking traffic!

that's it in a nutshell. austin has a lot to offer. if you need more info, i'm currently unemployed and don't mind talking to you a bit about austin.

also, i really don't mean to plug this, but check out www.hillcountryoutdoors.com. if you like being outdoors or if you just like meeting new people, here's the place to start. and to boot, about 70% of the women ARE looking to get laid. just play your cards right you're there (keep in mind i never took advantage of this because i don't like to ho myself out like that...it's just that most guys don't mind doing it lol).

anyway, welcome to austin and good luck! feel free to pm me anytime.

We just got back last week & we really liked the SW part of austin as well, especially off the 71, bee cave area, all the way to lakeway.

The traffic was pretty crazy like you guys say, it's so spread out people are coming from everywhere.

Thanks for all the great info!

I lived there for 6 years, at first in the riverside/oltorf area. It was ok, but then I moved near William Cannon (SE) and it was a bit better. I would definitely recommend the southwest area near Barton Creek Mall. It is really nice.

Yo I just moved to the north central part of austin, in a neighborhood called hyde park near 45th st. It's a cool historic neighborhood with the usual cool coffee shops, indep. restaurants...nice area for twenty-somethings, grad students, young professionals...not dominated by undergrads at UTexas

My wife and I went to the Hyde park area as well during our recent visit. Very cool area, reminds me of berkeley, Ca.. We went to a restaurant called Mothers's Cafe on Duval & 42nd, they serve vegetarian & vegan food. Excellent food.

hyde park = expensive and old. cool place to live though. it used to be the only hip place to be. if you can afford it AND actually find a place to live in hyde park, then yay go for it.
