Hello! Hi, I'm new here

Hey all...I've been browsing the forums for a bit but am just posting now...I don't know nearly as much about trance as most people do, partially due to the fact that Southern California isn't big on it, but anyways....my favorite artists/groups/DJs are Ayla by far...I also like Alphazone (Revelation Original is a great track to me), and Darude (Passing By is my favorite)...couple questions...One, what kind of trance is this? Is it considered progressive? Secondly, can anyone suggest some tracks or artists similar to these (Ayla's style in particular)? Thanks!

Welcome to the forums. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. Those tracks aren't exactly my type of listening so I wouldn't know much about them. I'm sure someone else around here will be happy to answer your questions though. Enjoy your stay here and again, welcome to the TA community.

heh i cant say darude is progressive....

i think ya next step is to get some DJ Tiesto , Paul van Dyk, Sasha tracks just to get you acquanted. Once u start listening to more trance the more u will realise how basic the darude stuff is.

Yeah. Not a big Darude fan. Ayla, on the other hand, is some good stuff. Look up some DJ Tandu (he is Ayla). This style is definitely more standard or epic trance than it is progressive. Just experiment with different stuff and find your groove. You should definitely listen to Sasha's new Involver album. It is progressive and kick ass. If you don't like it at first, give it time. If you listen to the album a few times, you should become accustomed to the sound and start loving it. If not, steer clear of proggy for a while and stick with Trance like Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, etc...

No exact definition. Go by your personal truth here. A question like this is well-intentioned and I've asked it myself many times, but inevitably leads to flamewars.

"Progressive is an attitude" is the best way I've heard it. Go to a site like:

http://www.progressive-sounds.com

And you'll get a feel. "Progressive" is a term that's said so much but can mean so little. In short, "prog trance" is trance that seemed out of sync and wacky compared to other trance created during the same timeframe, but later becomes commonly accepted and perhaps banal because of stylistic trends and lots of copycats jumping on the bandwagons. We can only hope maverick novel ideas are taken so seriously!

A warm welcome to TranceAddict.

Heh, good one. Ishkur does it again:

quote:
See, here's where things get all muddy and confusing. Progressive Trance is really supposed to be nothing more than an extension of Progressive House, which is a ten year old term to explain music like Leftfield that was housey, but with those spitting synths that are ubiquetous trance.

Sometimes the word "epic" is thrown in the mix for extra confusion. I like this example, because it shows that to a degree, trance could be called arpeggiated house music.

Go for something like:

A-minor ---> F-major ---> G-major

And this chord progression is used in a lot of trance to bring forth emotions. Sometimes a "C-major" for extra lift and snare rush buildup.

Ah, the tree grows many branches, yes it does.

And what was prog yesterday is not necessarily today.

With the exception of Xpander, don't bother with Sasha. You'll fall asleep. At least that's what happened with me with Airdrawndagger. His new album Involver MIGHT be better but I ain't taking any chances.
