About the difference between the m3 and the m5...not much, but i think the m3 is discontinued? I personally would just go with whatever is cheapest when it comes to making that decision between technics decks.

As far as the mixer goes... I'd recommend the vestax pcv-275. Its solid, and should meet all your needs. Its right in the middle of your pricerange, i've seen it in local canadian stores for $500.

the pcv-275 is a good buy. As for the differences between the m3d and mk5 here goes:

1. 6g antiskate on mk5, 3g on m3d.
2. LED stylus lamp on mk5
3. Strob dots are a little different on mk5. (MK5: 6.4%, 3.3%, 0%, -3.3% M3D: 6%, 3.3%, 0%, -3.3%)
4. brake adjustment POT has been moved a little to the right so you can adjust the brake on the mk5 without removing the platter.
5. there are new markings on the back of the tonearm where the counter weight screws into.

Other than the listed featurse, both decks are the same, and one m3d and one mk5 won't look/feel odd together.
