Electric cars are one of those stupid inventions that give useless to society scientists something to do with their time, seeing as they don't contribute.

The future of transportation isn't in these inefficient pieces of crap thats for sure.

Gas/electric hybrids. The combo makes them cheaper in gas in the long run, plus the leavening of workload ont he engine increases life, thus increasing the $s saved on gas.

Pure electric is semi-ludicrous considering that there is only so much electricity and 300 million people charging cars all day plus everything else might be a bit of a drain

Totally electric cars would be great for people that live in cities. I don't know if I'd ever buy a full electric car, but I absolutely love the hybrid technology. I mean, oil's definitely not going to be around forever, so eventually a new fuel must be put to use. Alcohol would be one to consider, along with electricity and hydrogen. But for now, the hybrids are a step in the right direction.

And another thing, does anyone else think the government should step in and make auto manufacturers make their cars more fuel efficient? I understand that some people really do need big trucks for their work/other reasons, but if the government were to make the manufacturers add about 2 mpg to each vehicle, a lot of petrol would be saved.

Seriously though, it's typically harnessed by the burning of coal or nuclear means. However, the nation could try to implement more wind and hydro-electric facilities to lessen the dependency on the coal and to prevent having more nuclear pollution than we need.

How is using wind and water to produce electricity a dumb idea?

And don't think I'm some environmentalist "stop using oil" hippy. I just think more hybrid cars should be produced along with research on how to power vehicles when there's no oil left on the planet. If electric cars were to come about, it'd make sense to try to ween the power supply of the nation off of burnign coal to save more of that fossil fuel.

Ahh those methods of creating power are not yet that effective.

I'd put my money on cars with alternate power sources than oil or electricity being the future.

scientists in japan are looking to harvest energy crystals off the bottom of the ocean. The problem is these crystals only stay intact under the huge pressures of the ocean water. As they start to bring them up their crystalline structure breaksdown and turns into gas desolving into the water. The Japanese are trying to work out a way of bringing them up in quantities big enough for energy production. They estimate that there is enough of these crytals in japanese waters to supply their country for up to another 300years. <=== read that in an article somewhere the other day.

Also scientists are looking into biofuels or fuels made from plant oils and whatnot. Suppoesedly the rape seed plants oil is the best they have found. The good thing is the plant processes CO2 gas into oxygen at the same rate as a car could produce it (that is the amount of rapeseed plants needed to power a car 10km would also be able to convert the CO2 gas put out by the car over the 10km in the same time that it takes the car to drive 10km). I think the main problem is the space needed to grow enough rapeseed oil is too much.<--- something else i ead the other day.

But seriously, and I am sure it's been mentioned. The hybrids are the best way to go, at the moment. Battery technology is not up on a level equal to conventional internal combustion engines. And it's also not a good idea to have such a quick shift from one technology to another, ie reg engines to electric, hybrids are a good way to transition till electric car technology catches up (if indeed that is the way to go, cold fusion reactors could be they way, for all i know).
