i just wanted to share my thoughts on how shitty my wk/day has been. I woke up monday morning to go to work.. got in my car.. and i had absolutely no brakes. I finally got a ride to work 2:30 when i didnt have to be there until 4:30. then when i got to the area where i work at... i sat in borders book store for 2 hrs reading... i get to my work... only to fine out that my section ( i am a server) had been closed do to upcomming bad whether that night. then I get a shift from someone who wanted to go home.. which is in smoking. I make 45 dollars from 4:30-11:30pm...which normally ur supposed to make about 100 from 4:30-11:30 pm.. but due to F'in old farts and people who just want dessert.. they left SHITTY TIPS... which to make an announcement to everyone.. the average tip per server is 15%-20% depending on how good he or she serves u. Then today i go and drop my civic off to get it repaired and found that it is going to cost me $546 for the brakes to get fixed... yep brakes the babes must be made of gold. Then i couldnt get a damn ride to work and had to take the public bus .. which i have never taken before. the nearest bus station is about 2 miles away .. so i walk to the bus stop. get on the bus that the people told me to get on. Ride for awhile and have a strange feeling that this couldnt be the right bus. well turns out i was on the wrong bus. So i had to go Down Town Orlando .. to the Bus terminal thingy .. and catch this other bus. I get on .. and as the bus stops if starts to fill up.. then they stop and this big huge fat guy gets on and decides to sit right next to me.. out of about 20 seats he chooses to sit in the one next to me. it wouldnt have been so bad if he had put deoderant on or had taken a bath .. and if his rolls wouldnt have overflowed over to my space. But Be my luck i had to have the fat ass smelly homeless guy right next to me. Well after 2 hrs on a damn bus .. i finally get to work.. to find out i am in a shitty section again. and needless to say i worked from 11:30-2pm and made $10. So For a whole friggin $10 i got a shitty story that i just told u. Hope u guys had a better day/wk than i have had.

Where do you work? I hear the worst stories like that from servers who work over near I-Drive. The European tourists commonly stiff the servers because I don't think they tip over there.

I work at a rest. called The Cheese Cake Factory.. in the Winter Park Village.. in Winter Park. i mean the money is good.. and my tips are great... but damn it just seems like the friggin hotesses want to skip me for half the shift. Like today .. the average take home was about $50.. and I took home $10?!?! they had alot more tables than i did. I'm not a shitty server...lol. But I think that right now i must have pissed the wrong person off.. because my schedule is shitty and my stations are shitty. Right now is our slow season.. and average take home at night is still about 100 after tip out. But with me i dont get enough tables to even come close to that. Last night i was in the bar section which is also smoking .. i switched like a dumbass thinking that i would make more money.. well the person that i switched sections with ended walking with about 120 after tip out. Go Figure huh:-(

well, heres what happneed to me today....

about two days ago, this girl ripped the batteries off my graphing calc. im like, aww forget it, why waste time pursuing her? anyway, i bought new batteries today. i got my grapher stolen!! i also got my other back up grapher stolen. all in all, $200 down the hole. argh. sad thing....i have a test on monday!

^^^ nah i doubt it, shes usualy really nice to me...its probably in ghetto ceramics class lol. my stolen graphers dont even come close to how bad ur day turned out to be however. thats what parents are for (think: bling bling!) hehe

i am 21. and just to let u know as a server we dont just " type it in a machine and walk over and come get it " we get bitched out and yelled at .. have shit thrown at us. plus we run around like chikens with our heads off because when the guest wants something they want it NOW! and then if one of the cooks F' up and dont read the tickets right and make something wrong with the food.. then we get yelled at for it.. by my the manager and the guest. At my work normally we deal with about 20 people at one time bitching and demanding. and then when they get up.. we have 20 more people bitching and demanding. Once and a while u get lucky and have some one thats been a server before and know what kinda work it is to make whatever the guest at the time feels like putting on the cc slip or money in the book. We dont have a set hrly wage. Oh sorry we do but its 2.13 an hr plus tips. U can have a party that u bust ur ass on and their check be about 50-60 and walk with a 10% tip. or not even that. One time i had these little kids from HS leave me .73 cents off of a bill that was $73. Ur u get the ghetto people that leave u $3 off of $30 or $5 off of $50. when its supposed to be about $5-6 off of $30 and about $10-12 off of 50.

Ok, I've been mulling over my response to this thread and I've decided to take devil's advocate here just for the sake of discussing this topic.

Why do servers agree to accept a tough job if they only get paid $2/hr?

I've asked a couple people this question, and the most common answer is that they expect to be compensated in tips. But this thread proves that tips cannot be expected, because they aren't required by law to pay them. So, I ask another question, should servers get angry when they are not paid tips?

I'm expecting a lot of angry responses here, so please remember that I am just asking these questions to start a conversation, not to argue that side.

And i agree.. i excepted the serving industry because i know that right now since its the slow season... i wont be making shit .. but give it til about the middle of oct. and i will be making about 1k a wk.. like i was a month ago. when i say a wk.. i am going from wed- wed.. thats my work wk.

ever see that movie? the whole opening scene is a discussion on tipping. it makes a lot sense. you should check it out. it's a good movie too imo. anyways, that sucks that you are having such a bad week chikadee. if i was in florida i'd take you out to a party with pumping beats so you could dance your cares away. i'd even pay cover for ya too cuz i'd feel bad if i had to make you spend more money. i'm sure you're just venting. if you will be making 1k a week then you'll have nothing to worry about in a couple of weeks. when i see numbers like that it makes me wonder why in the hell i ever went to graduate school. c'est la vie! just kick back and test your golden civic brakes while listening to some florida breaks. cheers!

right on lost :-) i thought about going to a club and just not thinking about anything.. but i didnt have away to get there. But thanks lost that made me feel MUCHO BETTA! ya i think about going back to school for chem eng. if i can just make my money and go home.. and not worry about bosses down my back. But in the end this really isnt want i want to do in life. At least not for the remainder. But for now it will due. Ya in a few wks i'll be ok. But with in the past 2 months i have put almost 1600 in my car for repairs. when the car isnt worth it. Its just stressful. I dont have help from people.. because i choose to do things myself . I dont want to feel obligated to someone for helping me out. and unfortunately that has been my past experiences with asking for help. U learn ur lesson the first time. My mother is a single parent so she cant help me out .. she does as much as she can though. which is awesome. And it seems like people like taking advantage of me. Not anymore but my since they have in the past it has put me in the perdictament that i am in now. I know things will get better though. Its just the matter of time and patiences. Which i have lack of.
