Mixing two wav files - please help

Hi,

I need to mix two wav files using CoolEdit pro. After I mix both there is clipping even though each indivudual file does not clip. What is the best way to mix the two files so that no clipping occurs and also sounds loud?

I thoought of doing this:

1. Reduce amplitutde by 2 db for each file
2. mix the two files
3. Apply hard limiting to boost the level by 4 db

Will this work?

Please advise!

Thanks,

NK

are you trying to make a stereo interleaved mix or a mono mix or what?

clipping can be hapenning where zero-crossing waveforms are being mixed together and since some may or may not be perfectly in the same time spot, they'll be creating jitter errors and small distortions that you hear as little clips

reduce amplitude by 3 dB at least, but first try with 6 dB.
do not apply hard limiting, why do you need that? you will not boost the level by 4 dB, since if you boosted, it would clip, like the first time. after mixing, you can normalize the mix if you want to.
or do what most djs do - cut the bass in one of the files during the transition by using eq or filter.
