I visit the U.S. quite often, and one slang term that I can't use while I'm there is 'fag' . where i come from it means cigarette, but over there it means homo. Anyone else come across slang terms that u use that mean different things elswhere?
that also means homo but that one really hurts those who live "alternative lifestyles." i personally have nothing against homosexuals, but in HS for examples the word "fag" is thrown around so much that its basically lost its meaning. people call other people fags just to call them stupid. no one uses it in an insulting "anti-homo" slang, even though some of the people in my HS that are get a little offended.

My AP English teacher managed to fit in a lecture how "fag" became related to homosexualism.
Fag does mean a pile of sticks. During the witch burnings a long time ago, England used to throw the bodies of homosexuals on the flaming piles of sticks.
So it wasn't just randomnly chosen to call people gay, it actually pertains to it.

this is one that probably a few people would know of, but in Chile, when someone says "pico" it means penis, meanwhile in Argentina "pico" means liquor. It was wierd when I first visited Argentina to see some relatives, and I saw on the side of buildings and stores "Pico de Oro" which in Chile would translate to something like Penis of Gold.

Just use the term Fag here in the states and you'll probably get a uniform response unless you're a flaming homo yourself.
