Ishkur's Electronic Music Guide v2.0 will be nearing completion in a few days. He will provide all the samples and jaded, biased definitions of every genre you could possibly want.

So just stick around a bit until it's done. There's no real comparison over the net that I've ever found to his.

Instead of starting a completely new thread I thought I would dig up an older one that was similar for my question. How would you define tribal its subgenres if any. I believe I was at a club and was expereincing it but not sure.

Check this link:

ISHKUR

Then just click on 'Ishkur's Guide to Electronic music'. It'll bring up a Flash application with loads of info on the different genres. Click 'House' and then 'Tribal' and listen to the samples he's got on there. That should give you a fair idea of what tribal is.

handbag house has been around since the early nineties, long before what we now call trance

That's funny, because one of the first trance tracks (if not THE first) was released in 1990.

Not to mention certain research on the arpeggiated, hypnotic layering of trance and those ambient washes were common (without a four-to-the-floor beat) many years earlier in the form of the work of Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, and others. So add a kick drum and meaty bass and you're almost set to go. Of course, the tricks have increased over the years like a stabby, echoed (delayed) sound effect at the beginning of 4/8 bars, or panned gate effects moving inside the speakers back and forth, but the core principles are indeed the same.

Pshhh... when in doubt, invent your own genres.

DJ Joshua H: Haha... it's funny that list was last updated in '02. Oh boy are we in for timeshock.

BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!
