Wayne Rooney leaving Everton

Well, there you have it boys and girls. It's all over the British press now...I just saw it on Soccernet.com and am surprised there isn't a thread about it. First, Newcastle and Man U's bids for 20 million were turned down and then Newcastle's better bid of 23.5 million was also rejected. Now Rooney says he wants out because he needs to play in Europe to further his career. And get this...he says he hopes Everton fans will understand and one day will welcome him back as a supporter. Is he REALLY that arrogant or just plain stupid?

As an Evertonian, I'm just too upset to even talk about this anymore. He is the type of player that you can build a team around. Everton have brought him up since he was a kid and now he just turns his back on them. "Once a blue, always a blue" eh Wayne? It's precisely this kind of crap that makes me not want to watch sports anymore. Agents, money and greed are ruining it all.

The Merseyside press believe Newcastle is where he wants to go but I think he'll be a Man Utd player next week.

This whole thing has taken everyone by surprise and Moyes is right about one thing, if Real Madrid hadn't come in for Jonny Woodgate this would never have happened.

The bidding was all open at first but now both Newcastle and Man Utd are keeping their cards close to their chests. It's rumoured that a player plus cash might be offered by both sides to try and sway the deal.

Man Utd is the obvious choice for Rooney, he has a greater chance of winning medals there, greater fame, probably greater fortune. The only reason I could see him choosing Newcastle is that he knows he will be worshipped here, and the fact that he's idolised Shearer since he was a boy and Shearer looks set to be our manager next season. But if Newcastle got him it would be a massive coup taking him from under the noses of Man Utd. I just can't see it happening though.

I'd much rather see him in the black and white, as I respect Newcastle as a club. Plus, I also have always loved Alan Shearer (it's a pity he didn't play at the Euro...I think he might have made a difference)..and you can never go wrong with Sir Bobby. But Newcastle is going to struggle to make it 4th or 5th in the League so I don't see how it's better for him going there or growing into stardom at Goodison. Wayne could, after all, be a flash in the pan. His lacklustre effort last season was only shadowed by his brilliance at Euro and even then, he only scored his goals against middle of the road competition.

The thing that really bothers me is that he's only 18. He grew up in Liverpool as a blues supporter and even wore that shirt awhile back..."once a blue, always a blue." And now he wants out after 1.5 seasons? It's traitorous...and he's not much of a role model either for kids or anyone for that matter. Everton offered him 50 thousand pounds a week and he wouldn't even acknowledge it. I should have seen this coming, but it's foolish to hope. He's just another Barmby and Jeffers, among others. At least Owen gave Liverpool a few good seasons.

I know what you mean mate, we had it with the likes of Beardsley, Waddle, Gascoigne etc, none of them wanted to go but we couldn't afford to keep them. Rooney is 18 and has time on his side, but he has been stabbed in the back by The Sun newspaper and I think that has factored in him wanting to leave Liverpool and make a fresh start somewhere else. He agreed a lucrative deal with the newspaper which is hated in the city, and that turned a lot of people against him. The Sun have since exposed his visits to brothels in the region to publically embarrass him further. He probably thinks he'll struggle to live it all down. He might not have signed a contract anyway, but I think this has played a part.

Newcastle fans are really divided on whether we want him. 25M for an 18 year old striker seems crazy when we already have Bellamy, Shearer, Ameobi and Kluivert playing in the same position. Everyone knows we need a defender, our chairman tells us he's looking for a defender on top of Rooney but most of us are bracing ourselves as we will probably end up with neither and the Woodgate money won't be spent until January.

I wont say this as a mancheser united supporter (because in all fairness id love to see rooney sign for us as soon as possible) but as a neutral i wouldnt blame the lad for making this decision because at the end of the day, we all want to further our careers. At everton, rooney rarely made the starting lineup since he is not on the best of terms with Moyes and everton doesnt have the talent to back up his goal scoring abilities. Owen just recently did the same with liverpool which has more to offer than everton and thats just one example. Players from South America and eastern europe leave not only their clubs but also their countries to try their luck in spain england and italy because not only do they get paid a crapload more, their chances of being selecte for country are also enhanced.

He has always been an Everton fan, so he must see that him leaving Everton will only do the club good. They are in desperate need of money, 25 million plus the wages that will be freed up when he leaves will allow Moyes to bring in three or four much needed players (the Everton squad is tiny). If I were him I would move to Man Utd rather than Newcastle simply for the fact that Man Utd offers near guarenteed champions league football every year, thats the level he needs to play at to improve as a player!

unlikely with two days left until transfer deadline.

his timing for putting in a transfer request couldn't be worse.

I hope to see him going to MU (im a mu fan) but pains me that A.Smith's place in the striking force will be threatened if Rooney goes MU.
Smith's current form ...
