Needing Information: Trance Music

Hey everyone! This is my first post on this website, and I'm fairly new to Trance music. I currently live in Houston, TX (USA), and I'm interested in Trance music not only in the US, but globally. In the US they have "Billboard", which has yearly charts of the best music in many genres. However, they lack in having charts for electronic music, like Trance etc. Is there something like Billboards for trance music in Europe? I want to find out what the best trance songs, artists, and labels are. I'd like to catch myself on all the 10+ years of Trance I've missed out on. I'm trying to make myself a list of vinyl to buy, so that in a few months when I get my DJ stuff I'll be able to pick up a bunch of records. Also if there is such a thing is there something like that like a category for underground music. Like the top labels, and artists? Also does anyone knows where to get any information online, or something that could help me get into the world of Trance, and DJing I'd appreciate it. Thanks for your help everyone in advance.

Really your from H-Town too cool shit! Hey whats edm by the way? Thats good to hear cause I'm lost when it comes to Trance, I mean I've been to the International Dance Festival in Denver, CO when I was there. Paul Van Dyk was sick, so he couldn't be there, but I got a shirt signed by DJ Irene! Good hearing from someone so fast. Do you DJ by the way? Maybe I could pick up a thing or two from ya. Catch ya later!

First off, welcome to the forums!

Check out some tracklists for live sets in the Tracklist Section or CD/vinyl releases from the Reviews Section and see how people comment on them.

Screw any form of poll including Europe's dance chart! Find a style YOU enjoy, look into DJ's and their playlists and hit up events. Check out Discogs.com to find more info about specific labels, artists or songs. Mixing vinyl is easy.....just practice and be dedicated. A little advice before you blow tons of cash on records....buy a few at first, practice and only buy the ones that you really like and can see yourself spinning more than one time. Check out planetxusa.com for vinyl since they have a good selection.

Good Luck

Also check out the Trance DJ/producer sticky thread at the top of Music Discussion. Not only do they have websites for the DJs and producers, but there are links to record labels' websites.

DO NOT look at billboards.

Your gonna end up listening to Sammy and ....lasgo lol.

As for records to buy. First think if you REALLY want records or cds...also try to find stuff that YOU LIKE. I might be bashing on a Dj sammy liker but if that person loves dj sammy it dosent matter wtf i say. So like what you like. Dont fall into the category most people fit into these days. Most people like what they are told to like. So look around tranceaddict(live sets from pvd and such or just from Dj's that post their mixes). Now if you want some of my favorites or something. I suggest you Pm me and ill give you a list.

Hey tequilatwin2, and welcome to TranceAddict. It's alright to look at popular sources like Billboard charts those countdowns on television and whatnot, but the important thing is that you never, ever let them be your sole, guiding source of information. Compile a diversity of sources and then figure out what *you* like. If you can find no clear-cut starting place, perhaps look at a compilation like one of the Ministry of Sound Annuals or this one:

Ibiza - History of Trance
http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pag...CD&title=173201

By no means not a "fully comprehensive" guide to trance. What is? Nothing, that's what. We each find our personal truths and make our own histories charted by our life experiences. But these three discs feature favorites of many... as you can see by the tracklisting. It's an easy, accessible guide. And there are other compilations like this so see what appeals most to you. Some sites like amazon.com and fye.com do have sound samples, as well as:

http://www.juno.co.uk

Also, you may want to check out Ishkur's Electronic music Guide:

http://www.di.fm/edmguide/

Be sure, Be SuRe, BE SURE to read the disclaimers and have some fun because it's *not* meant to be wholly serious by any stretch of the imaginative imagination, but I believe you will find it enlightening, entertaining, and informational -- in short, edutational. F-U-N.

Also, check out:

http://www.allmusic.com

And their music map through the genres for "key albums" and so on.

"Best" as you hear it is up to you. We can help guide you but it's your call.

All the best.

Thank you! I use both and everything in between... a combination of the old and the new, the Salvation Army-grade bargain basement deals and the stuff that is either expensive or wayyy out of my budget (so I borrow it or sample bits-n-kibbles, or whatever). ;-)
