Hey tequilatwin2, and welcome to TranceAddict. It's alright to look at popular sources like Billboard charts those countdowns on television and whatnot, but the important thing is that you never, ever let them be your sole, guiding source of information. Compile a diversity of sources and then figure out what *you* like. If you can find no clear-cut starting place, perhaps look at a compilation like one of the Ministry of Sound Annuals or this one:
Ibiza - History of Trance

By no means not a "fully comprehensive" guide to trance. What is? Nothing, that's what. We each find our personal truths and make our own histories charted by our life experiences. But these three discs feature favorites of many... as you can see by the tracklisting. It's an easy, accessible guide. And there are other compilations like this so see what appeals most to you. Some sites like amazon.com and fye.com do have sound samples, as well as:

Also, you may want to check out Ishkur's Electronic music Guide:

Be sure, Be SuRe, BE SURE to read the disclaimers and have some fun because it's *not* meant to be wholly serious by any stretch of the imaginative imagination, but I believe you will find it enlightening, entertaining, and informational -- in short, edutational. F-U-N.
Also, check out:

And their music map through the genres for "key albums" and so on.
"Best" as you hear it is up to you. We can help guide you but it's your call.
All the best.
