Major Johnson - Progressive Mix (9-22-2004)

Here is my latest mix. I think it is a good blend of darker prog and some more melodic stuff. I am real happy with this mix and look forward to comments. Let me know what you think about both the tracks and also how the mixing is.

I only recognize about half of those tracks, but I seee a lot of labels and remixers that I really dig, so I'll download this and give you feedback in a couple days...

Come on guys. Tons of page views and no feedback

To anyone who actually listened to this. Maybe you don't have specific comments but what did you think of the few WW2 radio broadcasts I dropped over some tracks? Did it work, or was it lame? I need some feedback on this part at least.

... I sure hope Dingel returns to make his comments

alright i just gave a listen, and i really liked this, and there really isnt many sets i can actually sit through from start to finish, i felt a couple of mixes got sloppy with your beats, but otherwise the mixes were pretty nice, it seems hard hard for people to be constantly consistent with their beats being matched all the time during a whole set and im certainly no exception.... as for the ww 2 stuff, i really liked that, i felt they were spread out nicely throughout the set, but the problem i had with them was that they were there, and then all of a sudden for the last few tracks there was none, maybe they shoulda been spread out a little better, overally i really liked this

I'm glad you liked it over all. The reason there are no ww2 samples later in the mix is that those tracks all had vocals. But you bring up a good point. I was thinking about rerecording this and making it my offical "demo" and I think I might add another track towards the end and layer some other sample over it. (Now I just got to find another sample that would be appropriate )

Pluses:
I enjoyed it a lot, and will definitely "keep" it to listen to again.

Minuses:
I thought there were a couple of audio glitches? One track seemed to be playing out of only one channel and another sorta hickuped. Don't ask me which ones cause I listen to these things in the dark so have no clue where i'm at in the mix

Other:
The lyrics in I believe the third track were driving me nuts trying to figure out where i've heard em before till I realize they were the Jules Donnie Darko song lyrics

Thanks for the reply Subey. Actually the first three tracks all have movie samples in them (sorta, the Donnie Darko one is not directly from the movie, but where lyrics redone). Of course eveyone knows the Matrix sample but the Unkle track uses samples from The Thin Red Line (the newer version, not the original). When I first made the mix I realized I had all these movie quotes in a row and was afraid it mght be formulaic, but I think the tracks are all different enough that it works out.

I recorded this in Adobe Audition but encoded it with CDex (LAME codec). Did anyone else notice these audio problems?

u brought up a very good point that those tracks at the end were vocal so it was impractical to put more ww2 stuff there, that never even crossed my mind.....

I don't like track two - that Matrix dialogue is so overused. The track is decent, but it just doesn't need Keanu talking.

Your dark tracks were banging. Let them bang away. If they're good, I say that you should let them stand on their own. Don't take away the deep and dark feeling by tossing vocals on top.

I think that the WW2 speeches had a negative impact upon the mix, because they caused me to focus on the words and their external connotations, which distracted me from the mix. This is a problem with using popular quotes and clips, instead of using unknown samples. I have a number of memories associated with the president's speech to congress requesting a declaration of war upon the Japanese, so when I heard those words, I started thinking about those other events. I was no longer thinking about, or listening to your mix. The externalization was a disruption. If you were using samples of which I didn't have external experiences, then they wouldn't be distracting. As it was, I think the clips weren't warranted.

I enjoyed the last couple of tracks, despite the fact that I normally hate vocals and think that most vocal tracks are crap. Plenty of musical merit to these more melodic progressive tunes. I especially liked Ridgewalkers feat El - Find [Original Mix], nice pick.

Thanks for the feadback. Its good to get some ther views about the speechs (especially your explanaition).

I have come to beleive that the quotes help people who would otherwise not like those darker tracks appreciate the mix. I don't mean to say that everyone who said they liked them doesn't appreciate a good dark prog track but I have noticed with my friends who have listened to the mix (who usually like my more trance oriented sets) respond surprisingly positivly to this mix. Of course I really dig these tracks and think they sound fine on there own. I guess I am just trying to express what I think I am starting to understand. Now the question I need to answer for myself is whether I like them in the mix or not. Obviously I don't strongly dislike them (I probobly wouldn't have posted the mix in that case) I just haven't really made up my mind.

EDIT: I also think if I used shorter quotes they may not overshadow the playing track so much. They may still have the problem you mentioned about bringing up other thoughts if they are famous, but at least they are not playing for two minutes of the track.
