Question for all DJs

Do you use BPM-counters to your aid when mixing? Very simple question. I'd also like to hear your opinion about them, 'cus some new turntables (well, CD-tables) I've seen have them.

Nope, I will never use them, its better and safer to use your ears, and thats how you really should do it, there ain't any rules for DJin, so do what you want, but myself along with probably 99% of the DJs here will advise against it.

Only time I use them is for syncing effects, or changing the speed of them.

well i tried but some tracks each time are read differently..or some have the exact same BPM but one track sound faster than the other so screw that..play it by ear

Likewise. Don't need them, don't want them. Learn to use your ears or you may as well just use Traktor, imo.

Never.

One exception and that's at the beginning of a recorded mix. I often start with a too high bpm which is fun to mix but kinda annoying to listen to. So that's when I use the BPM counter on my Pioneer to set it to 138 when I start. I don't use them for mixing, because it's not accurate anyway.

They are plague. Do not use them. I am to this day still tempted to use them whenever I can't beatmatch. Bad idea.

The only reason I would even think about using them would be if I had a 3rd deck to mix effects, quick loops and vocals etc

Other than that, your cheating yourself if you have to rely on machines to beatmatch for you

i never used them when i first started spinning
i had a shitty mixer anyway which didn't have them so it didn't matter
that was for like 3 years
then i got a DJM600, i use it sometimes, mainly to find out what the BPM of non house tracks. not to beat match them necesarily but just to know what records are close enuf that i can beat match them
also when im mixing and i think i have the tracks beatmatched and i'm sorta bored waiting for the time to mix the track, i'll switch on the BPM counter and play around

Nope -- like someone else said- never have, never will.

Seems like a useless feature to be on a turntable or CD turntable. They're generally not very accurate and it's really not that hard to learn beatmatching without them.
