School Shooting in... Finland. 7 killed

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7082795.stm

Before people start badmouthing the USA about school/campus violence, they should look at what's happening in (the supposedly more quiet and peaceful) Europe. In this case, good ol' Finland.

quote:

At least seven people have been killed and several others injured in a shooting at a school in southern Finland, medical officials say.
Police have given no details of the injured victims, hurt in the incident in the town of Tuusula, some 50km (30 miles) north of the capital Helsinki.

Finnish media reported that the shots had been fired by an 18-year-old man at the town's Jokela secondary school.

Police inspector Tero Haapala said later the situation was under control.

Mr Haapala said that "there is no danger to outsiders", without commenting on reports that police had arrested the gunman.

The school building is still surrounded by police and ambulances.

Dr Eero Hirvensalo, the head of the medical response team, told the Reuters news agency that seven or more people had been killed and that the death toll could rise.

'Jumped from windows'

A Tuusula municipality spokesman said the gunman opened fire during a lesson at Jokela secondary school, Finland's STT news agency said.

tudents and staff fled in panic, and a number of heavily armed police were later seen rushing to the scene, STT reported.

Kim Kiuru, a Jokela teacher, said the head teacher announced over the school public announcement's system just before noon (1000 GMT) that all students should remain in their classrooms.

"I stayed in the corridor to listen to more instructions having locked my classroom door," Mr Kiuru told Finland's YLE radio.

"After that I saw the gunman running with what appeared to be a small calibre handgun in his hand through the doors toward me after which I escaped to the corridor downstairs and ran in the opposite direction."

Mr Kiuru said he saw a woman's body as he fled the building. He said he then told his students to "jump out of the windows... and all my pupils were saved".

Some media reports suggested a message on the YouTube website was linked to the shooting.

Jokela school has more than 400 students aged 12 to 18.

It is the first reported shooting incident at a Finnish school.

And before YOU start bad mouthing the "supposedly more quiet and peaceful" Europe, perhaps you should wait to see how Finland deals with this incident compared to how America deals with these incidents (ie nothing whatsoever)

In 1996, some bloke walked into a school in Scotland, shot the place up and killed 16 children and their teacher, then turned the gun on himself. The classic "American-style" school shoot up. But the difference was that following that massacre, the UK immidiately made all hand guns illegal, unlike America who continues to allow its citizens to own all sorts of guns

So why don't we wait to see what effect in Finland - will they take the British route and act accordingly, or will they take the American route and do nothing...

And in the UK, the nations rank as the most violent. There are the most stabbings and assaults in the UK than anywhere else in the world. Sure the rest of Europe may be more peaceful than the US but the UK isn't a good example of Europe passivism.

I never claimed the UK was a beacon of hope for the free world, I quite clearly said that after a massacre school shooting, they immidiately changed the law, which they did. End of

Now only the criminals have guns. Makes perfect sense.

Well if by "the free world" you mean England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland I would be inclined to agree with you. Anyway, we're quite clearly discussing gun crime, so telling me the UK has the most stabbings and assaults, even if true, is irrelevant to the topic

I'm not sure that's true, either way, we're talking about gun crime, so can you honestly tell me there is more gun crime in the UK than in Amercia?!

criminals and despots

"There is no doubt in my mind that millions of lives could have been saved if the people were not 'brainwashed' about gun ownership and had been well armed. Hitler's thugs and goons were not very brave when confronted by a gun. Gun haters always want to forget the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, which is a perfect example of how a ragtag, half-starved group of Jews took 10 handguns and made asses out of the Nazis."

Why do you think the UK police don't have guns?
