Using cracked versions of software

I am wondering what the production forum concensus is on using cracked version of your favorite software; from instruments, to effects, to mastering.

I dont post here alot, but it seems like many people constantly have problems with all types of software which begs the question: "Is your software cracked"? Maybe its just me, but if you download the newest synths, waveform editing software, and mastering applications, and expect each to work perfectly, youre deluding yourself even more than you are by avoiding purchasing the software. Besides taking away from the makers of your favorite programs, it also has the potential side effects of corrupting hours of work with a simple mis-click, and allows small software vendors to be snapped up by large corporations with deeper pockets, further alienating those who want to support a music community rather than a corporation.

Im not expecting admissions, but alot of people should think about where their priorities lie. I hear so many people on this forum, and in widely dispersed chat rooms and other forums discussing how they want to make millions, be the next Tiesto, this years G&D, etc. Yet to do this, they are stealing from the very music community that they expect to support them. This type of hipocracy is standard in every musical genre, but I always hope for better from the people around here, particularly this forum, which has such a strong production and live peformance forum. If youre one of those who uses the excuse of "sampling" a program's abilities for years, please consider those who make the software and are trying to do their part to make the trance community grow. As dozens of artists have shown over the years, it's fairly easy to make a trance song with a proper amount of dilligence and creativity, but to add something indelible to the trance scene remains a goal as elusive as the Holy Grail.

Just a small opinion I felt like I had to post.

ffs... you're not the first to say this. It's human nature, get over it. Just by having some long winded stupid hypothetical argument about this issue is a waste of time and has been done too many times on these forums.

I'm not condoning piracy - my music is all hardware except for Spectrasonics Atmosphere (which I must say was a bloody good investment).

But I think that most if not nearly all of the users of pirated software would not have bought the software anyway.

I think of Warez users as younger, poorer and non-professional people, who want to have a crack at making music, but it is nearly always (maybe always ?) a non-profit hobby. Sure, they aspire to be great, but if software was undownloadable I doubt they'd save up and buy it anyway.

There are of course a few exceptions to this rule, but I think vendors are not really losing a significant amount of money from these punters.

Softsynth and software manufacturers are living in a fools paradise if they think that the bulk of their software is going to be purchased by musical hobbyists.

Compare this to say, MP3's which are really hurting the music industry - artists, small and big companies alike.

Go buy the software. Every sort of piracy is highly illegal and you are just damaging the music industry even more by downloading your programs off the internet instead of buy them.

Yes, in theory that is all well and good. Try telling a 15 year old, who has just spent 2 years wage at shitsville^tm to buy a computer, to go work another 2 years to pay for the software to use it... Why would such a person bother when they can get it for free?

Your elitist anti-priacy crap is flawed like communism

Piracy is bad but its always going to be there

What a lame attempt to soothe your own guilt.

And why the hell doest this brat think he's got the rights to steal ?
Its not a human right to play with or produce music, or steal, regardless of how much of a Tiesto-fanboy you are.

I know several now-famous artists who used (maybe even use, but I hope not) pirated software to make their music.
Most people simply can't afford $700 software with 4 $300 synths, a $200 drummachine, $400 compressor etc etc when they're 16 years old.

Doesn't matter if you could afford 10 of those packages, most people can't.

Oh, and nobody loses anything even if I download a $4000 program 20 times, since I wouldn't have bought it if I had to pay 15-20 times more than I can afford.

Not only that, but paying that much money to 2 weeks later find out you think producing music sucks, well...

Idea

From a theoretical point of view, of course

I think a lot of people out there download all the illegal software to hone their skills, learn about synths and effects etc.

But once they feel they have all the skills (or some, at least) decide to go out and buy the equivalent hardware, for that improved sound quality.

No1 in there right mind would go out and buy a hardware synth, not knowing jack on synths

Obviously, this is still piracy, and Im not trying to condole it, just thought this was an interesting point that I felt like sharing.
