Greatest tech album of all time, imho, is Speedy J's Loudboxer. A bit harder than some of his other stuff, but brilliantly produced.

And if you don't mind techno with a more minimal edge, try Richie Hawtin's Closer to the Edit. Great concept and - especially if listened to on headphones - guaranteed to take you to another place.

No way. Granted, it is a well produced album and the overall sonic impact is immense, but the innovation level on this album is pretty low considering what he had produced before this album came out. If you want Speedy at his hard and more creative side, go for "A Shocking Hobby" from 2000.

Thanks for the suggestions. I already have Loudboxer (really good), and have heard Closer to the Edit, although that one was too "floaty" for me.
My tastes are more close to the "efficient" style of Marco Carola, Stanny Franssen, the Drumcode producers, and Smith & Selway as well as more "electro" oriented stuff like Ellen Alien and L-X-Carbo - if that makes any sense?!?

For easy-listening techno (beware, all three albums sound the same and get boring quite fast).. Get the Alexander Kowalski albums.

Other (relatively easy-listening) things that you might like are:

Dave Ellesmere - Rites of spring
Sebbo - Mit leib und seele
Johannes Heil - Future primitive
Johannes Heil - Heilstyle

And a really great one (but most of you people wouldn't classify it as techno, I think) is Aril Brikha - Deeparture in time.

out of general interest as someone who's just getting into techno, are albums generally as good as say singles or EPs, like will their be some filler on there, or is it pretty much all quality as a rule ?

Depends what you're getting. Some albums are just compilations of previously released singles and EPs, where as others are all new material. And obviously the same rules apply to techno albums as to any other album, sometimes it'll be some filler, sometimes it'll be all quality, and sometimes it'll be all crap.

Overall, techno artist albums do not really appeal to me, since most producers stick to their own sound too much, which makes an artist album a bit too boring for me.

Of course, there are positive exceptions to this.. The Liebing album for example, though I don't like it myself, is pretty varied in nature.
