m-audio delta range has 'the broadest compatibilty of any soundcard on the market'. at least thats what it says on the back of the box of my 1010. bold claim. i havent had any problems with it so far (although ive seen a motu 828 mk II in action and i *WANT* it. enough to sell my delta and pay the extra cash to own one ). you can buy more deltas to get more ins/outs or buy an omni i/o which is an m-audio breakout box expansion to the delta 44/66 for a pre amp and more ins/outs. or you could spend a little extra and get the 1010LT which has 10 ins and 10 outs which is niiice. the 1010LT is one of the best budget cards i reckon and you can find them for alot less than retail price on ebay. even retail price varies.
ins/ outs are what you'll need if you are planning to connect alot of stuff like synths, amps, mics and monitors to your soundcard.
if money is no object then look at some of the stuff MOTU are currently cranking out.
