For all the talk about the death of edm there is little discussion on how this can be fixed.

One key element to sustaining success is attracting new fans and listeners to the industry. One common complaint non-edm fans can have about this form of music is a lack of excitement generated from seeing a guy stand up the front playing records with headphones on.

Rock music fans at least get a group of people jumping around on stage, often dressed up a little, and when you consider the low profile of edm musical artists when compared to other musical performers and the fact that there is often little to differentiate between artists for the edm newbie, the casual dance music listener could be inclined to not feel special or appreciate a decent live set.

This brings me to the huge popularity of acts such as Basement Jaxx and the Prodigy. You would be suprised of the pulling power a dance act with a little bit extra can have.

This makes me wonder why Djs are not more creative with their live performances?

Not everybody gets excited about a web broadcast of edm, especially people that are yet to appreciate this form of music. So why don't producers and artists spend more time being creative with their live shows than sticking to the tried and tested, non-innovative way?

Why are there not more live vocals, more dancers, more than just green lights and lasers?

I would rather EDM remain more about the sound of the music than the silly gimmick that the artist has. All that flashy excitement stuff is supposed to be the responsibity of the people on the dance floor and the people that throw the party.

Thats just my opinion tho,I have seen some DJ's that have gimmicks and do shit during their set in attempt to stand out. That stuff does work and will bring more attention to the person, but it makes for people who get to be really famous musicians but have shit music.

More Djs need to start actually being musicians.

I'd rather dance music wasn't listened to by all these people that follow fashions. i'd rather the listener at least had total interest in the music and not the way the dj looks.

Why do you want dance music to become mainstream. It will oly lead to a decline in quality as every little muppet tries to get in on the act. It's happening with rock music now and it happened with hip hop a while back.

They are live acts and often release chart hits. whats your point.

Dj's do innovate with their live shows. What about jeff mills exhibitisonist tour or plastikmans new live act.

I think you'll fins dj's don't add vocals becasue a) they can't sing b) they don't produce half the tunes they play and c) oh fuck i've forgot to cue the next track.

lasers are used in clubs worldwide and have been used for over 10 years as far as i'm aware.

dancers - have you ever actually been to a club?

1. More performances outside instead of in clubs( i.e beach).

2. More concert style performance.

3. More women DJ's that that show their ass and tits would make EDM very popular. Think of a Britney Spears or Madonna type DJ

haha i wouldnt mind a DJ that puts a bit of emotion into his set rather than just mix like a statue for 2 hours and go home, cue Chris Lawrence at Creamfields bit of smiling and laughing and clapping along helps!

Spicing up live shows need not be all about tackiness, cheaps tricks or going pop or mainstream.

And I will not bother arguing about the benefits that increased popularity brings for all levels of the edm indutry, and the benefits of getting more people to live acts and people being introduced to the scene. Those that want to live in the 'the more underground the better', 'the less popular the better', 'the more true fans the better', 'people should only attend to appreciate the music' bubbles please feel free to continue to do so as tunnel vision is not my prefered viewing style. re: chesco.

My tip is that the next generation of edm stars will begin to become more creative with their live performances, and venues.

The question is how to push the boundaries a little whilst staying true to the music.

there is a definite difference between pvd DJ'ing, and K90 DJ'ing though.

i wouldn't say i enjoy pvd any less tho, even tho he's not normally giving it that much in the way of "WWWWAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!"

but i love it when a dj gets into his or her stuff, it makes the live performance that much more enjoyable
