Question Tune Selection

Just curious how the rest of you decide what vinyl to buy. Where to you hear it first, or do you go browsing through those online clips most online stores have? When you hear stuff the bigger DJ's play (recorded sets), alot of that stuff is near impossible to get sometimes! How do you find your "new" tunes?

tw1tch, I try a couple of different ways.
1) Listen to live sets. I try & listen for something that catches my ear. Then try & track it down.

2) d/ling tracks from places like TA etc. Have a listen to them, then decide about them.

3) Artist, I'll try & have a listen to some tracks, purely based on the artist & past experience, I'll do this with: Rank 1, Dumonde, Goureyella, Tiesto.

4) Similarly label, I'll try & listen to certain vinyl (at stores or d/l) based on the label & again previous experience eg: anything on Xtravaganza

5) Vinyl stores. Some of the stores I'll ask to listen to some vinyl off the shelves & point out which ones I want OR if the assistant is fairly knowledgable then I'll ask to be given any trance / progressive styles. I've tried to get friendly with most of the vinyl store owners, because then you have a better chance of getting records that they may not put on the sheldf, because they don't have enough. Then certain vinyl come out from the back rooms.

6) Lastly, in a few of the vinyl stores I've been to in South Africa, the guys are really friendly. So if one customer listens to a track & thinks it's incredible he'll often pass his headphones onto other customers to listen or the store will put it over the main speakers for everyone to hear.

I keep a .txt file on my PC where I keep a list of what tracks I am looking for as well as any specific remixes.

Nope, I didn't even know about them until after I decided on a name to use for here. I signed up for a hotmail account to send any spam too and twitch came to mind, someone had it, so I used 1 instead of i and just kept it for now.

I buy what I like, it's really that simple. When I hear a song I like that I think I would play, I buy it and worry about how I can use it later :P

What I do, aside from listening to all the live sets I can possibly find, is check the new releases at every online record store I know of. I will then either purchase them online or try to find them locally. Browsing through record stores is always good too if you have the time.

You forgot a very important one. Talk... Talk to other DJ's... Talk to trance lovers... Find out what their favourite tune is. You'll probably know/have it already, but this will be widening your knowledge of other peoples tastes. If you haven't heard of the tune then check it out for yourself!
