Anyway, I don't think anything will be quite as special as the old GU compilations, in no small part because CD mix compilations aren't old enough to be special again. Those polished, detailed booklets were what made those GU editions worth buying and keeping as collectors items, and I don't see Armada or anyone else rivaling that.

That said, how did GU skip over Berlin in its 20 year tenure? It took them until 2014 with Solomun's GU 40 just to even drop into Germany.

can be good, actually. but we all know, being released on armada is a fucking bad sign.

If you look at the tracklists you'll see there's nothing from Armada itself on either entry. I believe it's their attempt to tap into the credible market, although obviously the name Armada is going to preclude any actual Berlin techno name from working with them.

Armada seem to be going a bit like Ministry Of Sound. Most of their releases will be commercial shit but you might get the occasional Northern Exposure project.

Not sure how the Seaman one got past me, but I've heard the King Unique one 4-5 times, I quite like it. It does seem a bit odd for Seaman to do one labelled Berlin, but I'm optimistic it will be enjoyable.

no, there's no armada stuff on here. dj's have been given free rein over the tracklist... dave seaman mentions in an interview for decoded magazine (great site - check it out!) that only licensing issues came into play when coming to compile his list, which i'm sure is a factor for any mix cd - i wonder if the armada name was a further sticking point though?

he says also in the interview that he has plenty of berlin names and labels on his mix, hence the name. seems curious that they used the armada name for the mix, was that a conscious statement? don't they have less tainted, more fitting sublabels? isn't armada the main cheese platter, directly associated with armin?

i wonder how involved armin was in this project... i'm guessing probably not at all. maybe he greenlit it, or gave the green light. who knows.

the KU disc is fucking killer, a proper mix - dave seaman mix seems pedestrian by comparison.

Yeah that sounds pretty Dave Seaman: just kind of rides on the current wave and delivers an average version of whatever his peers are doing. At least on a compilation. I don't recall who it was, but someone in the 'night out' thread posted a couple of years back how surprisingly exceptional he was live, so there's definitely the side by which a DJ feeds off/into a crowd that you just never see on an hour and a half studio mix.
