I am currently working on a design and technology project, and have decided upon looking at vinyl storage and designing a better solution to the current methods on the market. I have designed the following questionnaire in order to recieve response from dj's of whom use vinyl.

If you could be so kind as to complete the questionnaire, and then either posting your response on here or messaging me with your answers, i would be grateful.

1. How do you currently store your vinyl?

1. How do you currently store your vinyl?

i store my vinyl in crates, mainly the collapsable type, and i have one large crate that the council gave us to put bottles and cans in at another house, which i accidentally stole

2. What was the price of any storage you are using?

free for the council box, the collapsable ones are about £10 for 3.

3. Do you feel happy with the design and use of this product?

with the council one yes, it's very very sturdy and larger than most crates, although it is quite bulky it holds loads of records (probably about 200 - 250). the collapsable ones are a great idea, but they sometimes feel a bit precarious when carrying a full crate somewhere. they hold about 150 records

4. What quantity of records do you take to a nightclub or venue for playing out? (Please specify the amount of time you would play for with this quantity)

well i genrally take about 60-70 records with me regardless of how long the time slot is (unless it would be a 3 hour set or something), that way i get a good selection and can play what i want as & when. technically with 60-70 records i could probably wack out a 4 hour set, but i like to carry more records than i need for selection purposes.

5. Do you usually sort your records into any particular order? For example aplphbetically on artists names, into different genres or maybe bpms.

usually i sort them into labels, with generally the slower more down tempo stuff towards the front and the harder stuff towards the back. although recently this system has gone to shit, mainly because i havent kept them in order and have been taking them out with me a lot etc etc

6. What would suggest to make transporting vinyl easier for you?

a trolley bag or even some kind of teleportation system. i hate carrying records

1-How do you currently store your vinyl?
Records i play out at work (im a professional dj) are permenantly in my UDG bags downstairs ready to take out. Everything else is in wooden storage racks up the top of the house racked according to genre. Recent stuff ive removed from my box stays in a special box downstairs for a while.

2. What was the price of any storage you are using?

No complaints at all- they stack fine and are perfect size as i custom made them.

bear with me- this could be long!
Very rough generalisations:
-General night (Dance,house and urban):
3x large UDG bags(total id estimate at 330 12"s) +2 240 CD wallets, and maybe a smaller bag with a few odds and sods 12"s-

--Dance+house- same as above, minus one of the UDG bags (my urban one)

-R&b/hip hop/urban night- 2 UDG bags- about 200,maybe a shade more,Occasionally an extra warm up box of 12"s (55)and always a small cd wallet (rarely used)

-House night- 2 UDG bags (200) and one cd wallet (rarely used)

All my nights last either from 9:30/10:00/11:00 to either 2:00am or very occassionally 3am

I always take more than i would need, as to be prepared for any eventuality, but also to give me a wider choice.


5. Do you usually sort your records into any particular order? For example aplphbetically on artists names, into different genres or maybe bpms.

They are boxed into genres- i dont list any other way- with the exception of my rarities.
Urban box- r&b hip hop, Drum&bass in seperate small courier bag, as is garage stuff.
House- all house
Dance- commercial stuff, then classics and the odd non commercially playable track.

I have a photographic memory (seriously) so dont need to order them by label or artist- i can tell you where each and every track is in my box or storage in seconds. With the exception of one f*cking strictly rhythm/kenny dope 12 i cannot for the life of me find. Eaten by mice i think.

6. What would suggest to make transporting vinyl easier for you?
Less weight (physically impossible), bigger shoulders or a bag bitch (surprisingly easy to find). Its a minor inconvenience carrying big bags- wont stop me from using vinyl ever. wheels dont help as you still need to drag them and encounter things like steps.
UDG have it pretty much spot on as far as im concerned.
I have a big car and boot so no problems there either.

I also vote for the teleportation device- sign me up.

(1) How do you store your vinyl?

A-Z by artist in a specially designed storage unit/DJ workstation (holds about 1000 vinyl units) designed by me and built by my father who's a trained carpenter. The records I regularly use and play out are kept separately in three record boxes - I regularly switch stuff between these and the storage unit described above.


(2) What was the price of the storage you are using?

Nothing. The storage unit is built from cheap MDF wood, painted and varnished and then reinforced with steel brackets. The whole thing was a present from my father so I didn't pay anything: I don't think it cost him any more than about £20 for the materials.


(3) Do you feel happy with the design and use of this product?

Yes, I'm very happy with it. The storage unit has been specifically designed not just to hold 1000+ vinyl but also to house some of my music production gear and my decks/mixer sit very neatly on top of it. I designed it so the decks/mixer sit at exactly the right height for me as I've had back problems in the past when using decks and mixer that are set too low.


(4) What quantity of records do you take to a nightclub or venue when playing out?

Probably about 150 or so, usually for a 90 - 120 minute set. I'd much rather carry too many records than too few - I hate getting to a gig and thinking "oh I wish I'd bought that record."


(5) Do you sort your records into any particular order?

Yes - two ways. At home (in the storage unit mentioned above), records are listed A-Z by artist so I can find stuff easily. When I pack my bags/boxes for gigs, I sort my records by key, starting at 'C' and then going chromatically upwards (so C is at the front, Db is behind C, D is behind Db and so on). All my records have little labels on them listing the BPM and key.


(6) What would you suggest to make transporting vinyl easier for you?

Anything with wheels which you can pull along, instead of directly lifting which can damage your back.

3 record boxes 2x50 and 1x80, 1 homemade record rack holds 100, 1 plastic crate holds 100 and the rest are stacked on my bedroom floor.

2 record boxes 30 quid each, 1 record box 60 quid, 1 plastic crate 5 quid and 1 homemade rack 20 quid.

Approx 50 records, ranging from 1 hr 30 to 2hrs plus cd wallet.

Labels and artists sometimes genres.

A trolley, a vinyl rucksack (that could hold 50) and a vinyl cutter so I could put loads of tracks on 1 record or 50 of the worlds sexiest women to carry one record each.

Freak, how much did it cost to put those storage boxes together? And how difficult was the carpentry etc?

HAHAHA i know what you mean, for me its always that old classic that i know will fit in perfectly in a mix, but can never find it!!! Never thought to blame the mice, perhaps i shoukd invest in a mouse trap
