I belive he is refering to what the shake thing is in fruityloops or etc. Its that Sssss sound you hear alot in trance its usally on the same pattern form as ur closed hi hats.
I usually use shakers as part of the perc in my tunes, as for making a good pattern with them I really don't know, it just comes naturally, I listen to the beat and think how the shaker (or whatever perc I'm puttng in) would sound good in that song, and then I just stick it in... Usually uses 8th and 16th notes, in a slightly syncopated pattern. Also small changes in different parts of the song are good, makes your production a bit more interesting than the same pattern all the way through.

Yah there is really no rules to this sort of thing. Basicall grab a sample, drap it into your step sequencer, select the pattern in the playlist which you want the use for the shaker. Then from there its your own thing. As Dj Spiderman said, typically shakers mimic the common openhat pattern on the off-beat. I like to do something like this:
K - - - K - - - K - - - K - - -
- - s s - - s s - - s s - - s s
not very impressive, but open up the velocities for the shaker,
and decrease the velocity of the second shaker in the first beat, then decrease the velocity of the first shaker in the second beat, and continue on like that. This adds a nice little dynamic to the shaker that is very audible but also subtle.
Sample discs, samples websites, a few of my vst's have some
all over. Buy a copy of just about any digital music production magazine and there's usually a few on the cover cd.
