I have this weird problem...

That is really freakin me out. First off, during the day I can take a nap no problem, but lately I have not done it to try and correct my sleepless nights. Anyhow so as I lay down to go to sleep, I have a sensation of shortness of breath. I try to tell myself it is my imagination but it still bothers me. The weird thing though is that when I start a drift off, I get this very odd rush of somesort and it wakes me up immediatly, for a few brief seconds I feel as though I cannot breath at all and I start to panic abit, and my skin gets all flushed. Then it goes away and the process is repeated 10-20 times in a single night before I eventually fall asleep. It has had me baffled for the past 3 days. I am taking different substances to try and help me sleep such as 5-htp, melatonin etc. I have stopped taking them at night 1 by 1 to see if they might be the cause of the problem. No change. I dont want to see a doctor because I cant afford it. I cant seem to find any info on such a problem on the net either. Now im paranoid and keep thinking that I have shortness of breath all the time. Maybe someone here has experienced such a thing, maybe not. Looks as though it is not a regular occuring problem.

It happens to me too. Its a bit of paranoia in a way, you are trying so hard to fall asleep that when you are right about to fall asleep you startle yourself out of it. Try to relax more. Also the best way to fall asleep is to try to stay awake. Keep that in mind next time you go to bed, if all else fails try to count your ventian blinds, very boring and it will make you tired rally quick since its all so blurry in the the dark you will continue to loose count before your halfway done and have to start over. PS dont sleep with your face in the pillow. Reduce your caffeine intake if you have one and the best way to fall asleep is smoke a nice fat blunt.

if you want to lay off the substances one by one, it is recomended to stay off each one for 4 days at a time to get it out of your system. or so i hear.

anyway, what you described is creepy.

and i agree fully with eyesofexstacy that you should smoke pot.

You should take vicodin for sleep problems it a pain killer, a pretty strong one and taking them over a period of time will cause ulcers and stomache problems etc. I would recommend tylenol PM if you were to take anything or tell your doctor to prescribe ambien. If your doctor is cool he will probably call it in for you with out you having to go to his office and be charged for a visit. Ambien is a mild sleep aid, it comes in as little as 5mg, try smaller doses and see if they work before taking the 20mg ones. This lowers the risk of having stomache problems in the future. Yea sex is good too as others mentioned.

BTW Valerian root is a legal and herbal muscle relaxer and you can get it at a vitamin store. Aslo dont know if you have tried this but get some sleepy time chamomile tea, that helps relax you a bit as well if you are a tea drinker. Lavender also assists in sleep so try some aromatherapy candles or something for your room.

Good Luck and I hope this helps

I sometimes experience what you've mentioned. It would usually happen if I'm trying to fall asleep on my back. It would only happen 2-3 times at most. Now I usually go to sleep on my side/stomach and the occurences have decreased (in fact, can't remember the last time I experienced it).

Right now I work full time and go to school 4 times a week at night, so being tired and falling asleep within seconds isn't a problem.

Maybe a textbook will make ya sleepy?
(I know I'd fall asleep within 5 pages of some of my books)

Yea I dont sleep on my back anymore, its just uncomfortable for me. I prefer sleeping on my stomache or side as well. Actually I also noticed that ever since my boyfriend moved in a lil over a year ago I sleep ALOT better althogether. I assume its confort knowing that someone is there with you. And snuggly too
