To my knowlede and experience, you have the following type of genres within Trace.

Gothic
Melodic
Progressive
Psych
Garage
Ambience.

Within EDM itself, you have TRANCE, TECHNO, INDUSTRIAL, HOUSE!

what exactly is garage/gothic trance?

Garage Trance would be, playing layered loops and ambience music on Garage beats. For example, listen to mixes by DJ Cosmos and Mythos.!

Gothic Trance would be female vocal sounds, but no songs or lyrics. Just vocals.. For e.g. NU-NRG mixes. and A&B.

Get an idea ?.
