I'd like to get everyone's opinion on preference between cross-fading and channel-fading as the primary method for mixing.

I previously use to cross-fade, but then switched to channel-fading only. I felt that this worked better for me and gave me better control, although involved moving 2 slider knobs instead of one, and thought this would make sense in case I ever had to mix between more than two channels. (I do realize however that you can turn the dial next to the cross-fader to select a different channel to cross-fade in, whenever you need to, and I imagine that DJs who are using more than 2 channels, but prefer cross-fading, would do this.) Now, I understand that cross-fading can inherently involve channel-fading as well.

For reference, I use a Pioneer DJM-600.

What do you other DJs out there do? What have you noticed as the preferred method of DJs? What are the pro's and con's of using
either method excluseively?....thanks so much for your help.

do whatever u like to do better.......if u find u have more control with the input levels then use the ....I have useded the x fader on a vestax PMC 46 MK2 for years and u can't find a better xfader to mix with it had the best curve......now i'm back to a rotary knob mixer only .........i miss the crossfader mainly for smoothness for this reason...... when mixing it kept one hand free to adjust the vinyl/cd..... when u on rotaries its is kinda important to have 1 knob movin down as the other is moving up to keep your levels tight when u have to constantly adjust for like cd it'll make u work!!!!but u can really get some nice mixes either way!!!!...what ever compliments yor mixing style.....and what the hell use both...some mixes u wanna do will work better with different methods..

i think its silly to say you only do one or the other. both have their uses.

i use channel faders to bring tracks in and out (along with eq's obviously) and the x-fader for cutting or if i need to chop out instantly sometimes i'll just wack it accross and worry about the channel fader later.

i usually channel fade but the crossfader isnt totaly useless, ill use it sometimes, havent recently though

i use channel fader. only time i use cross fader is when i'm screwing around scratching. it sounds really bad btw

thing that bothers me about cross fader is that curves are symmetric. maybe i don't want my music fading in and out symmetrically. i'm sure there's a way to adjust it and i've been a lazy bum to not to look fo it...

and you thought you had issues

both for me. it helps ensure you dont accidentally have one channel acutally playing over the other whilst trying to cue.

I use the upfaders, and I would even if my crossfader curve wasn't ass, which it is.

an asymmetric curve on a x-fader would be mint!
