Need a break thru....

I am sure a lot of the tranceaddict here feel the same way i do. Im 18, othere might be a lil older, love trance, like unstoppablely into the music. Know how to spin, love to spin and want to spin in a club. but then the question comes down to this.....
everyone can beat match, style can be similar, etc.
so is quite frankly impossible to make a break thru, or even to get rekonized but someone else other than your own roomate and gf......

I just moved to TO, was from BC but am an azn from HK, the scene here is awesome but would like to hav some heads up on where to send CDs to, wat do they ask for and how....I do noticed that 18 is not the legal age here, but there must be something i can do rite?

thanks a lot.

hey, i know how u feel man. its also very frustrating for me right now, but i was able to pull off a few gigs in nyc after some hard work. i just tried talking to other dj's, promoters and network as much as possible. i still got screwed a couple times and have only spun 4 parties, but just gotta keep at it.

as for your comment about mixing, i think that its sorta true everyone can just mix, but thats why u gotta think of new ways to be different. i'm looking into getting a 3rd turntable, a cdj, and an effects processor to help me try new things with mixing and djing. of course i'm looking into scratching as well because one of my good friends spins hip hop and does some turntablism. there's definitely new ways to move to set yourself apart.

try sending mixes to promoters, clubs, djs. and just talk to as many people as possible. if anything spin for online radio to gain experience. hope this helps..

1) I think everyone has a distinct style or vibe they push forward. All successful DJ's use music as a form of expression. I think you should try to understand yourself and ask yourself " what style or vibe is me" If you are true to yourself and never compromise you will be recognized. I can tell you that there are many trance DJ's and they are all differnt in many ways; in programming, in mixing, in styles/taste for tunes, etc.

Everyone is differnt. We all have led differnt lives. We all live in differnt places. We are differnt people. Thus our understanding of life and music should be different. Understadning yourself and the music you want to push forward thus is critical in becoming a true DJ.

The conclusion is that every DJ is different. We are not the same. Just look at the tracklists of the DJ sets on this page.

2) I think your motivation should be to play music you enjoy and share it with people rahter than trying to play in a club.Which is the vibe I got from your post. I fear that if I told you certain qualities that were needed of a DJ in a certian club you would change your entire DJ personality just to get the gig. Again I believe this is dangerous and destroys the most fundemental aspect of what a DJ means; being an unique individual expressing yourself through music.

3) There are many ways to share your music with others. Throw parties. Dj at school events, etc. Give your friends demo cds every week or so. Pass your demo out to everyone. Send your stuff to online radio stations. Post your mixes online so people can hear them. Be creative.

If you follow these steps you will not only become a club DJ but most importantly you will enjoy doing it.
