I was wondering something. When you guys make your sets, do you play the whole entire song or just a part of the song?

It all depends. Lately, I have been mixing partial pieces of songs, trying to create quicker mixes. It's more of a practice thing for me though. Most people mix the intro of the incoming song with the outtro of the outgoing song, so a good chunk of each song is heard. A typical transition should last anywhere from 1-2 minutes (at least for trance). A good rule to keep in mind is most people don't want to hear more than 7 minutes of a song, no matter how long it is. On my latest published mix, I broke that rule with the first song and I still don't like the fact that it seems so long to actually get into the mix.

If it's a decent song I'll play it in full, but the first two minutes or so at the start and the end will be playing along with the previous/next tunes.

If it's one of these songs that dies down then builds up again, which is a structure I find quite boring because I don't wanna hear the same thing again, I start mixing it out when the main lead is playing, so it's out by the time the tune's build up again. Sometimes hearing the tune build up again at the same time as a new tune's building up can enhance a mix.

Smallest mix should last 64 beats. However, even that is too little since it is only little bit less than 30 seconds. Also, unless you are spinning prog, I don't think it is such a good idea for your mix to last 1.5 - 2 minutes. Some melodies may begin to clash.

I thought a dj was supposed to make sure everything fits together and melodies DON'T clash...

About the mixing: it depends on the song i'm playing, and what song i intend to play next.

Usually, my mixes last around 1 to 2 minutes, depending on the songs i'm mixing and the vibe i want to set. If you want a more relaxed set, you could play a bit more of each song, creating a very basic and laidback mix.

If you want a more energetic mix, you can start the incoming song a bit sooner, and make the intro overlap the other song a bit more.

I play mostly progressive and tek-house, and the energy is pretty constant in those kind of records, they don't really have build-ups and break-downs, which makes it alot easier to mix in another song halfway in the track.

a minute is plenty long enough for any edm track mixing. Some will be way shorter cause it sounds better that way, so there really is no right or wrong way, just whatever sounds good
