Should they just cancel the dj mag top 100?

I hear apparently that it should be out tomorrow but I mean look what we have created, a fucking monster people. Deejays now send emails begging people to vote for them and now it is validation for whoever wins it, to hype it for the next year and make as much damn money as possible off it. Originally it was just to see what the public was thinking but now it has become the victim of its own success. So here is my question, should they stop it or not? why or why not?

it's all in the glory of big corporation, big business. it keeps the money rolling in all the clubs.

but i think the dj100 is a big help for many clubs around the world who do not have access to the big names in the EDM business. clubs can look at the list, and see which djs are hot or not. a known example would be christopher lawrence. i have seen more us stops for him since his name has been appearing more in the dj100 list the past couple of years. the list gives the small djs an opportunity to make some money outside their home countries.

I got spammed in my mailbox as well by various DJ's to vote for them. Most of the DJ's that spammed I don't like anyway, didn't how how they got my emailaddress. The DJ Mag Top 100 for me is nothing but a popularity poll. They can continue it, but they need to change it to "most popular dj" instead of "best dj".

but does'nt the top 15 just result in overhype. I mean Tiesto ran with the top spot the last two years and he made a ton of money but I'm tired of seeing press for deejays saying he finished 3rd. I mean it does that validate you? I thought we judged a deejay on his output, not his placing in a publicity competition.

I don't think they have any intention to stop it, after all it gives fame to the magazine. But I agree with the two previous posts, while it isn't by any means a good representation of dj'ing skills, it is a good representation for clueless promoters to know what popular dj's to get. And yes it should have "MOST POPULAR" glowed into the title, preferencially with a twice as bigger font size and in bold.

*edit* for clueless promoters to get not to fet what in hell is wrong with my keyboard today?

we're the only ones who know so much about DJ's. When i bring friends out they don't go, oh i love how smooth a dj's sets are, or how much they play with a song. They go, oh he's #3 ? Damn! This is gonna be a sick night huh!?! The hype can be a good thing because otherwise they are just another DJ to anybody else. There would be 100's of DJ's without a place in the world, and this just allows people to see who has the biggest fan base. You can play with the question 'why is he # X' forever

Most of the people who vote in those polls know next to nothing about DJ's. An actual, constructive list that values merit, worth, integrity, ingenuity and commitment in the profession of DJing would have very few trance DJs on it at all, if any.

I agree that the DJ Mag 100 is a popularity contest, but it does serve several purposes:

-for a person new to the scene, he/she can take a look at the list and find out who is the most popular dj's and decide if he/she wants to see them in person

-promoters use the results to help promote their parties - being able to say that you're bringing in the #1 dj as voted in DJ Mag will probably bring in some people that might not otherwise attend the event - most parties are money losers (which is contrary to what most of you think) and having one or two huge parties that make money help promoters to bring in the smaller, lesser known dj's

-it always provides good conversation/debate after it comes out

-it validates to each and every dj that makes the top 100 that they must be doing something right! obviously, it also allows dj's to charge more for each gig if they are high on the list - but what's wrong with making more money?

-you can look at the top 10 or top 50 or whatever and see what styles of edm seems to most popular - obviously it has been trance for the last several years - but you can see trends in the scene by watching the dj mag list

The poll is only about who's popular and has nothing to do with technical skills, but I think it does provide some insight in the scene and where its going.
