like i said before, it really depends on the situation. While at home i have no problems w/ my cheapo radioshack rca cables, but when i take my gear to otherplaces, i did get ground loops and other unwanted crap i didn't like. Also, how long are your cables? if they're longer, you will be more likely to pick up RF-noise. (unbalanced cables can act like an antenna) If they are short (less than 10ft) less noise will be picked up.
1/4" TRS cables are not too much more expensive than regular 1/4" TS cables. I would take a trs-trs over a ts-ts, or ts-rca in a heartbeat.
As for XLR compared to TRS i see no real advantage other than durability.
I've been helping w/ setting up audio equipment w/ my church for the past year, and the first time they got their new gear setup, they and a really annoying ground loop during the service, and they also picked up CB radio transmissions from the near highway during the service. Good balanced interconnects, proper wiring, and grounding makes a world of difference.
