It is helpful to have someone to help you through the programs, but I have always done it by myself. Obviously, read through the manual before you start to get a good idea of what does what and then just start playing around with it to figure out what works best.
Also, try and get a hold of some .rns files which are reason project files. Open one up and see how other people set everything up.
The guys round here should sort you out with any questions as long as they aren't ones that are mind blowingly obvious and clearly stated in the manual.
As far as reason getting far enough, it is a solid program for anyone starting production. Just get some decent samples as the percussion samples in reason aren't the greatest. Try and find some free .wav samples. There are plenty wandering the net.
