I would find it hard to believe that all the functions of that unit couldnt be achieved easily in software, so, u know, theres not a lot of incentive for people to buy such things other than on impulse

I just like the tactile control of using a piece of hardware. Also you can route external audio through it and use it as an effect processor, which I would like to add to my DJ setup.

Mate, I thought about something like this long and hard for a long time. I wanted the sampler version because I'm so use to using the x0x style drum sequencing but I really don't think they are worth it ay. I reckon they'd be more of a hastle then a solution.

Why would it be a hassle? I like the feeling of hardware, plus I can use it as my FX processor for my DJ setup.

Is there another product perhaps cheaper and/or better that would suit my needs?

Compared to software, hardware can be a pain in the arse. I really don't think the electribes offer good enough a product to be chosen over a software version for the price that they charge for them (unless the price has come down since I looked at the them which was quite a while ago).

Any decent hardware synth will allow you to use it as an fx box for live performances.

Don't get me wrong, I think it'd be great to play around with, but if you are going to buy hardware, I think it is best to buy a dedicated piece of equipment rather than something like this.

nah they are great fun and excellent value for money. Just imagine making music without your mouse.. its addictive. I remember tweaking those er-1 buttons for hours at my mate his studio. Emx has about all functions of er and ea-1 and even more so I'd definately consider this box if you are looking for a decent groovebox.

I just wish it had a sampler too, like a combination of the EMX-1 and ESX-1. I've decided I'm going to first get good at DJing then I'll worry about what production equipment to get...but I'm definitely keeping my eye on the EMX-1

one of my friends has an emx-1 and hes a dj, not a producer really. ive had a go with it and its one of those toys which is just fun to play. its hard to describe. the layout is clean. it makes sense. everything is in front of you. not like some VST drum synths/samplers which hide itself in tabs and buttons and extra windows. it feels natural to twist a filter sweep out on a rotary than it does graphing it in your host or dragging it awkwardly round with a mouse. you can get some decent grooves going and layer them over the top a mix set (provided you can work out the bpm or you are one of those blessed few that can midi sync everything.) if you are into your DJing aswell as your production this toy is pretty cool. my friend keeps polishing it with his sleeve all the time (with such frequency it borders on the point of being weird). like a kid that sleeps next to his first transformer. ha!
