Hello,
Does anyone know how to extract audio files from pc games? There are some games with interesting sound effects which I would be interested in recording. I'm not trying to get the musical tracks or anything just brief sound effects clips.

There isn't really a magic bullet solution because various games (and software engineers) store their audio data in different ways. There are often programs written (usually by curious individuals) for the purpose of extracting graphics or audio from specific games. Is there a particular game you're interested in?

also remember that the audio in the games are copyright and it would be illigal to use them...

(open up the doom3 pak files in winrar to find the audio )

I'm not interested in getting music files or lenghty music from games, just some cool brief SFX sounds I hear from games. Would that still be taboo you think?

There are several games I can list. For example, in 'Rome:Total War' after the player completes his/her turn there is this really cool effect which I think might sound great in a tune lol

So there is no general way to do it? It depends on the way the game files are formed/compressed?

Yah, its different for each game. And some games make it reeeeallly hard to do. But I remember wanting to do some custom models for warcraft 3, and I was able to extract everything to do with the game. So there are ways. Do a little digging on how the data is stored, and there is a good chance there is a utility to do the job. But i dunno about Total War, its not like people mod those games or anything.

yer it depends on how they archive everything. GTA vice city for example has all the sounds in a folder so you can just browse them in windows explorer. some like quake III, doom III was pk3 and pak files which can be unzipped using winRAR. sometimes you need special tools to open up archives. e.g. for knights of the old republic, to get the sounds out of it you need to use kotor tool and extract them. depends on the game. usually theres someone who has tried to mod it and has uploaded the tools as freeware. all sound effects in game are copyrighted. you need permission to use them in a song. although...if you are REALLY subtle about it and do some chopping and changing, they'll have a hard time spotting it. so just dont make it too obvious.
