Connecting question

this might sound abit dumb, but ive just got myself a apple g4 laptop and i want to record mixes from my technics to my laptop. i have a pioneer djm 500 mixer. do i need any recording programs to do this on my laptop and also what kind of leads do i need and how/where do i connect them?

any help would be much appreciated.

p.s if i want to play my tunes from my laptop onto my amp do i need extra cables to do this?

thanks, max

you will need a 2 x phono to stereo mini-jack cable. you will need to take a line from one of the outputs of the mixer, to the line-in on your computer. if your laptop doesn't have a line-in, it will sound shite and you will probably need to buy a new soundcard for it. you will also need recording software, such as cool edit pro, soundforge, or wavelab.

as for playing from your laptop, you can use the same wire. just take the line from your line-out (the main speaker output on the soundcard) to the relevent channel on your mixer or amplifier.

Phono to stereo? I think you mean mono
The most common way to put it is 2xRCA to 3,5mm Jack cable.

no, phono to line or tulip connectors. You need a 3.5mm Jack to RCA cable.

why would i mean mono?

2 x phono (RCA) > stereo minijack (3.5mm) is the cable you want, unless of course you want to record in mono, which sucks big hairy balls.

buy from here:
http://www.cybermarket.co.uk/ishop/923/shopscr393.html

i think they are pretty much the cheapest in the UK for cables and adapters.

As all 3 recording programs suggested above are not made for Mac, I would say go to digidesign.com and download ProToolsFree.
