i put this here rather than in the DJ zone just so other people can get a chance to see this and react...

on friday night i got to watch D:Fuse spin at a local rave. he used CD's during his set. more surprisingly for me was that PvD also used CD's (i saw twice) at his preformance in Houston. i have also heard of mauro piccotto using them... is this going to catch on? or stay as a side option for a track or two?

Quite a lot of DJ's don't mind using CD's. Danny Tenaglia is another DJ who spins with CD'z as well as Vinyls. As long as the mixing is tight who cares right.

cds will always be there cause there are some tracks that are not on vinyl that djs want to spin
but i dont think they will completly replace vinyl its an artform

i love watching the dj q up records and see how he does the mix not just pop in a cd and then press a few buttons
i myself am getting ready to buy a cd mixer to go along with my tables but i dont see them taking over

Wazzup up fellas? This I my first post on here. I 'm trying to kill
some time while I wait for this van buurin set to download. I don't have a problem with cd's...actually I wouldn't mind geting a cd player to go with my tables cause its hard as hell to find those old tracks, but records will always be my fav. Playing with records gets you into the groove...just pushing buttons doesn't do much for me. What ya'll think about those mixers with the bpm counters. I think thats fucking garbage....it takes away the skill. Oh well....just my 2 cents.

dude, i was gonna mention something about it in my PVD in Seattle thread, but didn't....
anyways, PVD used CD's interchangably with vinyls here in seattle last nite...and he kept messing with the cd player cos i think it malfunctioned until some maintenance guy came and seemed to fix it or something....i never heard of the BIG GUYS using cd's before...but whatever...sounded great anyways...

I was reading last months issue of Dj Times Mag...(the one with Danny T on the cover) and he was saying that on any given night his set is 50%+ on CD. To quote him he said, "I can just do more." Now I completely agree about the art of turntablism...that won't ever change. Vinyl won't be replaced, only suplimented with pre-promo's and tracks from companies with limited vinyl pressing resources. A previous post was talking about it being easier for the labels to test out a bredth of material before finding which ones will be economically feasible to press. Pioneer is really making products that sound great, function like vinyl, and offer a huge wealth of tools that are not offered on the turntable.

Now about the BMP counter. I spin recreationally in my room for myself and for a few close friends who listen to my mixes and give me feedback. I have 2 CDJ-100's, a DJM-300, and an EFX-500. Its marketed by pioneer as the entry level professional set. Now...My mixer does have a bpm counter. But its really just a clumsy compass. Dialed in to matching bmp's NEVER NEVER NEVER means that the beats are even close to being the same BPM. You CAN NOT dail in 141 on one and 141 on the other and just match the beat. I've seen it off as much as 3 BMP and the two are flawlessly matched (ie 138 & 141) Since the stuff I spin is almost exclusivly played between 135 and 143 BMP...I have an idea of where it is within this range. When practicing I use the BMP to get it in the neighborhood(ie +2 or +4 or +6%...it lets me focus more quickly @ the fine toon of the mix. You still have to do all of the BMP matching manually, the BMP counter merely shows you where to start. once the BMP is matched...then matching the beats only takes a few seconds.

Please don't fall into the trap of thinking that the BMP counter does all the work and all you have to do is match the beats once the counters are in sync. This I promise you is not the case. Usually they are off by a bare bones minimum of 1 and usually 2 when the beat is flawlessly matched. Considering most trance dj's mix withing a 5to7 BMP window (135-141 and some to even 144)that is a huge difference. I see how you could think that a BMP counter could be an insta-PvD or insta-Tiesto feature...but you are gravly mistaken.

I couldn't agree more. I tried using a Numark CDN-88 for a couple months, it even had this feature where it would "Auto-beatmatch" the songs for you. WHAT A JOKE!!! It was so far off, not a single mix was dead on.. Not even close! The BPM counters on CD players do not work, they aren't that accurate. They only serve as a close approximation..

AvB used a CD too, so he could let us hear Iio - Rapture (AvB mix)

hype. i can't wait to hear that. i don't have a problem with djs usin' CDs. i think it's pretty cool that they're tryin' something new, learning and flowin' with society. that's dedication. anyhow, respectz to them.

I watched Ferry Corsten use cd's here in Toronto when he played a few weeks ago. It's just a much more convenient media than vinyl, easy to get, easy to make, two big problems with vinyl. I'm sure if they had the equivalent on vinyl, they'd use the vinyl, but if it's on CD, play it!! All the better for us!

Eventhough this topic has been brought up before, I still think it is a fresh topic. I'm am just glad that Big name DJ's are open minded enough to use them: I read the article in DJ times where Danny Tenaglia says he uses CD's about 50% of the time; I was at a club where George Acosta was spinning from Cd's and was selling the same CD in the club that night; DJ Gabry Fasano was spinning with Godskitchen in Club Glow in Washington D.C. and flipping through the CD case - he was even giving away Godskitchen CD that night. I like it...
