monitor in ear headphones
so i blew my christmas money early this year and my new toy really brings out the faults in my sony in ear heaphones. apart from the fact that sub frequency range is non existant on them. i cant afford a pair of proper monitors so i was looking into monitor headphones. im really quite comfortable with in ear headphones as opposed to those large diaphragm jobbies which engulf your entire head. my budget is pretty low so its less than £50 if possible. i saw sony mdr v500s on ebay for about 40 quid and was tempted if not for the £8 delivery fee inside the uk. thats a bit crazy. looked around a bit more and saw some shure in ear monitor headphones for around £60 and i checked the frequency response and impedence and it was looking good. but i found when i was looking around how wildly different these can be between headphones and even studio monitors. sony mdr v700 quotes a frequency response of 5hz to 30,000hz. that cant be right? the more expensive sony models quote a frequency response of 20 to 20,000 hz. especially considering that these headphones have a greater freq range than some top of the line near field studio monitors. i have suddenly become very confused. are in ear monitor heaphones comparable to large diaphragm monitor headphones for the purposes of producing music? are near field studio monitors preferable to headphones? or is this purely an issue of comfort (and maybe neighbors sensitive to loud noises, looping over constantly)?
