The status quo

One of my final exams is an essay on changing worldviews and the definition of progress. I've been doing alot of reading about practices in the world that cannot sustain(overconsumption, environmental decay, degrading morals, communities falling apart, etc). Ive been learing about this stuff for a long time and every once in a while I'll post a thread about an issue I'm concerned about and without fail there is always someody who favors the current situation over a much needed change.

While it is easy to disagree about individual issues, I've grown curious about how TA's view the current global situation so I've decided to post this poll.

Do you think that the world is OK in its current state, are you fine with the things that all us humans are doing on this planet? Are you overall in favour of the status quo?

OR

Do you think that our current situations cannot continue without adverse consequences, can you see some major changes that alot of people need to make in order for life to continue and get better? Are you opposed to the status quo?

no im not doing this to paste this in my paper, I already got my own thoughts together for the thing. I for one think that massive changes are needed or we are gonna kill humanity.

no, this world can at any time erupt into a nucleur war. very few people can be trusted, and the government only tells u what they think u should know.

do u realize we actually "don't" have control? we just think we do.

Things should change. But since I walk with pessimism by my side I'm going to say that no matter what changes are made, the problems will still exist. They might be problems of different proportions, but still problems. You can't eliminate problems with change, and if you do, most likely others would arise. It's normal. Humans tend to fuck up every step of the way.

Things have to change - but that's inevitable. I find consolence in the fact that there are people in this world totally convinced that things must stay the same forever and that people in this world also think that there is no way they can stay the same. It's so delightfully human.

All I know is, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Status quo. Yep, would be nice to end Iraqi conflict, but not at cost of starting up another in nK or elsewhere.

Well if you mean the whole world then it's going to constantly change really. Fair enough the west is gonna have it's little sustainablity issue (i.e. we arn't) but more and more peple the world over are becoming less and less sustainable (china, india so on). So in the end as the rest of the world becomes more developed I recon out lifestyle here will be come less and less viable. The gap between rich and poor here will widen to the point where our poor area as bad off as developing countries, unless our rich are taxed beyond reason (late 90's 35ish% here in uk now 43%). Basicly it'll become a world less of differning nations but more of differing classes which I admit will probebly lead to the creation of specific nations becoming rich and other becoming poor(the rich will goto the best places). So it's gonna change an there ain't alot we can do about it I recon.

The world is always changing. It's just a question of whether current change is for the better or for the worse. I don't really think there is a global "status-quo" so to speak. However, people can certainly do things to ensure that change occurs more quickly, or does so quicker than it might if the situation were left to change on its own.
