Probably there'll be parties (usually psy-trance), although we need to check with someone from Rio. Hardly ever these parties are announced 2 months before the date though, we usually hear about them in the previous month/week.
As for Copacabana, seeing everybody in white celebrating has a religious reason (i don't know if you've already heard about it) and the fireworks are impressive - such exotic (and somewhat huge) event must be an unique experience
