Monitors for Production and for Djiing

Is there a diff? There are so many monitors out there seriously... JBL, Alesis M1 active, Behringer Truth. Where I'm from they don't stock many models in stores, so I we don't have the luxury of trying em all out at once. So by relying on the opinions of others, we make overseas purchases and get them shipped to our doorstep. only to find that the product wasn't what we thought it'd be.

But you guys have never failed me so I'm gonna base my purchase on what your views are hehe.

just some Qs...

1) is there a diff between monitors for producing n for djiing

2) are the behringer truths really that good?
3) does yamaha have any decent monitors? (reason being i can get a discount on yamaha products)

4) I know I might as well get the m1 Actives and be happy for the rest of my life, but i bet they cost a bomb. anything good enough for bedroom djiing/producing use?

cheerss all..

M1 Actives retail for $400 USD for the pair. It all depends on what your budget is as to how expensive that is for you.

Re: Monitors for Production and for Djiing

yes
Studio monitors are ideally designed to be as flat as possible, and not colour the sound at all- to give you a true representation of what is coming through the desk and onto tape.
Dj monitors need to be loud and have some punch and clairty- and most importantly be reliable and robust and able to take a shitload of power.
For home use just get some reasonable hifi speakers for use as dj monitors- thats all you need to be honest.

3) does yamaha have any decent monitors? (reason being i can get a discount on yamaha products)

For studio yes-Yamaha NS10m. Industry standard studio monitors and very good at at what they do. Have been common place in every pro studio for many years and will continue to do so.

The key to good mixing is not your monitors- it is your ears.
Cross referencing on different monitors and systems, knowing your sound and the room and having half a clue what you are doing with regards to particular frequencies is the main part of it.

Regarding the m1 actives... are there m1 passives?

Yeah they may cost 400 USD in the USA but prices seem to be insanely higher anywhere outside the US. Anyone know where I can get them in Singapore or Malaysia?

What would be an all around good choice for monitoring both home DJing and home production, as well as causual listening? Not too expensive either.

www.sinamex.com for Alesis Products. *For Singapore*
U from Asia?

Alesis M1 = Production preferably.
DJ wise, I rather choose something powerful bass like BOSE and JBL.
Unless you wanna use HR824 Mackie. (Some ppl do use that but for me I dun.) Production is Prodcution and DJing is DJing. Two different Monitor for each usage. I will NOT try to HURT my Production monitor.

Still for DJIng, Alesis M1 can be done but I prefer that to be Production.

You really need to find a way to listen to a variety of speakers in comparison somehow. I believe you cannot be sure to walk out with the right product if you don't. I, for instance, had from conversations with other musicians, planned to buy Mackie HR824s, but when I actually went to the store and listened to them, I noticed that while they sound absolutely brilliant, they only start doing so at volume levels that my neighbours are to not likely to accept and that I am uncomfortable mixing at! They're simply too big for my circumstances. So that made me consider their smaller cousins, the HR624s, but when I was comparing those to the other monitors in that range, another pair caught my ears and I ended up buying Genelec 1030As. They are a little more bassy than the Mackies (or the others I listened to in comparison), yet have an astounding clarity, and I marvel at them every day.

Good luck finding the right monitors, they WILL improve your productions if you heed their warnings (god my older stuff started sounding awful )

ive been meaning to get the alesis m1 actives for some time now since monitoring on sony fontopias has always felt more than a bit awkward. but i blew my christmas money on a virus b thing is, it really shows up my headphones lack of bass reproduction.

alesis m1s cost about £225 and thats the cheapest brand new. works out at the current exchange rate at about $450 USD. you can find them for less if you go for b-stock deals or if you ebay a secondhand pair. but minimum price ive seen is $350 USD.

anyone know of any reputedly good monitors that fit into the budget range? i think m1s are considered budget monitors already though
