you add/subtract something. Can be remove breakdowns, add effects, add vocals, percussion, basslines, etc.
why?
Because you feel the track lacks something to fully incorporate your sets.
how?
if you just wanna remove some bars or extend loops, Acid will do. If you want to add more things, percussion, basslines, aplly effects, Reason, Fruity, the whole gang..

Without knowing really what you are asking other than how to edit a track, I have found the easiest program to use in cutting up a track is a wave editor (cooledit, soundforge, wavelab, etc..). Use whichever you are more comfortable with and edit the wave. If you are asking how to remix a track, you need the other programs mentioned above and should prob. ask that in the other forum.

no i dont want to remix just to learn what edit is and how its done.


i have soundforge and lets say that i have a track with 8 bar intro. and fuck me i cant fucking mix properly cuz the intro is 8 bars. i deside to edit it. i record the vinyl in my pc import to soundforge copy the intro and paste right at the start. now the problem is how do i know that the gab between the pasted 8 bars and the normal 8 bars is correct???

you should use SonicFoundry's Acid for that. Acid will beatmap the track and then divide it into bars, you just need to select the bars you want, cut/copy, paste on the right spot (on this case right in the beginning)and you're all set, no gaps, nothing you do that in 2 minutes

I did this with a prog track that Airbase posted which ended two suddenly (IMO). So using Adobe Audition I cut parts of the intro and threw them at the end of the track. Because I needed the beats to line up exactly I was very exact with where I cut it and just used the track timings to line things up. It was surprisingly easy and sounds sweet.

I am not a big fan of Acid. For this purpose, you wouldnt need ACID's beatmatching function as the track you are editing doesnt change speed. In soundforge, you need to use markers and loops. Place 2 markers, one at the beginning and one at the end of what you want to move. Once they are placed, 2x click in between to highlight between the markers and play that as a loop. Use your ear to match it up so that loops correct to what you are trying to do w/o any pops or anything at the beginning or end of the loop.

Acid is just as good for the latter as well.

Acid still needs to know the speed of the track, though.

I'm also curious about this. Is Acid matehmatical in cuttign up the tracks. Someone mentioned you have to do it by ear to some extent. Which program allows you to be mathematical and exact when cutting up and rearranging tracks? Thanks.

The only one I've had experience with in that respect is Acid. You're going to have to do it by ear to an extent no matter what -- no program will always be 100% accurate with the beats on its own. It's really easy. I've done it plenty of times.
