Yes the djm500/600 sucks!!!

take a look at these mixers if you want built in effects:

Tascam X-9(dual effects banks with third external and channel assignable send/receive, plus dual sampler, tempo controlled sweeping filters on each eq band on each channel, plus it is a 24bit digital)

Denon DN X1500

Eccler Nuo 5

Numark 5000FX

Pioneer DJM3000

why not look at getting an external effects processor? have you seen the brand new Pioneer EFX 500-R or the EFX 1000?

Cheers...

I love my DJM-600, much more then my friend's Xone62. I think that DJM-600 has a much better layout and better/more usefull features. The only thing is when I DJ at clubs on those nice Rane mixers (MP44 for example), I begin to wish that I had one at home.
I wish there was a 12" Rane mixer with a VU meter for every channel and and an effects unit built in. (Basically a DJM-600 with Rane's EQs and sound quality)
By the way, don't listen to those guys saying "DJM600 SUCKS" without giving you a good enough reason. They are just like those brainwashed liberals in San Francisco, who are just doing it for a sake of being rebellious against the majority, if you know what I mean.
It's an awesome mixer with a perfect layout. It's great buy if you decide to get one used, but I wouldn't buy it brand new since it's been out for so long.

built in effects dramtically affect the sound qulaity of the mixer. I would reccommend getting an eternal effects unit if your heart is set on one.

From my personal experience pioneer mixers are baddddd!!The sound qaulity is very harsh; mids and hi's are not clear at all. If you plan to play trance/vocals/ or even top 20 tunes look else where.

Best low priced mixer with good mid/hi frequency is the denon dn
x400 .

Reccomend you check that out. If money aint an issue than I reccomend getting a Rane MP44 club mixer ( this is what I currently have). HUGE difference in sound quality and HUGE differnce in eq capability ( you can really kill the enitre mid freq. with this baby).

P.S.

My rane has the split-level meter for both the cued record and the out going record. ( theres a switch you flip up so activate this feature) THIS IS SO AWESOME. MY LEVELS HAVE BEEN SO PERFECT AFTER I BEEN USING THIS FEATURE.

Thats the draw back to the denon mixer no level monitor for each channel.

I highly recommend you go out and try them all, there all good mixers in there own way, as for the "DJM600 SUCKS" part, I've always liked playing on it, it does kinda such now when compared to the new mixers, but thats the way it goes, every bit of kit will have its time (excluding Techs ), I say try out the X1500 and the Nuo5 from Ecler, these seem to be the bad boys on the market for there price, there both awesome, it only comes down to personal preference when getting one, I went for the X1500 for the extra features and I explode with joy whenever I spin with it, check this THREAD to see my post of a couple Ecler reviews, and a bunch of stuff I wrote about the Denon.

Effects? Nuo 5. No alternative. That mixer is ultimate.

And as for the DJM: The biggest hype under the DJs but the biggest nightmare under sound engineers.

i personally love the djm600 & 3000 (the 3000 rules more, much nicer layout) as i find them beautiful to use. i am not of the view that it's shit because there are now better mixers. the truth is it's still the same (bloody good) mixer as when it came out and everyone bummed it. although the fact that there are these better mixers means you will be less likely to buy it if you are looking for top of the range spanky stuff.

personally, i wouldn't touch a xone 62 with a barge pole. i hate the faders & the x-fader, and the cue signal is pre-eq. the filters are top notch as is the sound quality, but when sat next to say a nuo5 or a dn x1500 its really a bit wank.

as for external effects units, they rock. go for the pioneer's as mentioned, the efx500 is wicked (also now available in red) but the efx1000 is the true daddy, with a price tag to match.

I bought a Xone :62 a few months ago and hated it. A lot of people like ot jump on certain bandwagons, i.e. "Allen and Heaths are the best" or "DJMs suck." I highly doubt that a lot of the people who make these claims have ever owned one or played with one long enough to really know what they're talking about. Like I said, I owned a Xone 62, had it for two days and took it back for a DJM600 which I love. I've had it for about two and a half months and am thoroughly happy with it. The layout makes so much sense, it's easy to use, and the sound quality is awesome. I have seen Pioneers installed in so many clubs its not even funny. If the sound was as bad as some people like to say, this wouldn't be the case. Ask James Zabiela how bad the DMs are. He'd laugh at you. Its the only mixer he plays with, and he's one of the most active mixers in the world. The DJMs are perfectly suited for DJs who want to do more than just throw songs on top of each other.

As for the Tascam mixer that someone mentioned. OMG, that is the cheapest mixer I have ever laid a hand on. Look at one up close, it is just so ceaply made. The faders are so loose that they actually move side to side a little bit. Tascam needs to have their head examined for chargign people $1000 for that mixer.

The Denon is a cool mixer too, nut IMO, the effects options are not laid out well at all. I personally don't think the mixer is very user friendly, but I guess thats just me. One thing I love about the x1500 is the tightness of the faders.

tu_face, I basically mentioned about the whole better mixer thing, because the DJM still costs a fair penny, if they dropped it from like 1600 CDN to 1000 CDN, then I'd be highly recommending it again, I am a fan of the mixer, its simplicity and how much you can do with it aslong as you have an imagination.

Zizack, have you played on the denon yet?, because thats what I thought about the layout and features when I got it, it all was alittle extreme, but after awhile of messin with it, I found it to be really well layed out, I do wish it had a wet/dry fader instead of a knob though.

they are coming down a little in price over here since the influx of new generation mixers (of which it was the first). its currently around £600 and i hope it will continue to drop

The DJM's have a horrid effects section, and thier final output stage to the speakers reeks of poor engineering and cheap circuitry.

The Tascam's are built like toys, a little static discharge or rough use and it'll be in the shop.. they also cost way too damn much!

The A&H Xone:62 has 4-band EQs. while they are nice to more control (drum kick vs bassline -- low vs mid-low) it can be tricky to work with. depends what you spin and how quick you need to make changes. I mix harddance, and the Xone62 is somewhat annoying to work with... I prefer a good simple box. just too much stuff on it anyways.

So getting down to good simple boxes:

A&H Xone32 (which is what I've been using for 2.5 yrs now) - Great simple box with awesome EQs and a nice easy layout. small, inexpensive, built like a tank. VCF's are very handy.

Rane Empath - Xone32 with a slightly better layout, full cut EQs, and a few more features. great box also.

Rane 56 - Ultra-Simple, Ultra-Reliable, Ultra-Easy. Curve control on the channel faders, no extra jazz at all - As far as a well-built, sweet sounding basic 2 channel mixer, this is where its at.
