What was the sound/style of 2004?

How would you describe the sound/style that was the most prominent in 2004? For example: some years were considered breaks year, progressive year, epic trance...ect

I would have to say that 2004 was the year of fluff trance. My definition of fluff trance: no outstanding melodies, less intense breakdowns, less dynamic song changes(no huge chorus that makes you just start jumping and dancing as the DJ slams it in), and less energenic. More grooving sets with a resemblance of a progressive house set instead of peak energy sets . Good or bad, it was different.

def. agree in the trance world at least... poor year for trance imo...

retro-electro breaks funky prog house and minimal tech were huge this year in the non trance genres.

In Holland it was the year of dark and tribal progressive house.

For one, it was the year of utterly stupid and piss-poor trance. Also, I'll have to say a bunch of DJs have started playing/are getting known for electro, and this style seems to be getting alot of attention.

Agreed. It seemed like every classic trance track got remixed by someone this year.

I also think this was the year of chuggy, yet melodic progressive. Not just the Markus, McProg, but deep, nasty, and chuggy melodic prog.

I haven't been following the trance scene this year, because I think it had nothing new to offer. 2004 has been a very bad year for trance if you ask me.

Breaks and electro really stood out last year, with so many dj's and producers getting up the ladder and becoming more and more popular.

Slight self-contradiction there, hm?
