When You Buy Records

will you turn down a more common producer's record in favor of a track you like that is more obscure? 9 times out of ten ill do this because i know i can get that tiesto etc. record again but that P.I.M.P record tune might never come back in stock. anybody else do this?

GIVE TRANCE A CHANCE....

I just buy records I like the sound of. Doesn't matter who it's by, what label it's on or who's doing the remix.

makes sense to me . but if i have a budget and have to pick between the two and they both sound about equaly good to me i tend to go towards the unknown producer. i feel that by buying this record and exposing it on my sets and to people they may be enlightened to a producer they have never heard before and pick up something from this producer, and by doing that then maybe one day that unknown producer could be the next armin..

1.Do I think I would play it a year from now?
2.Will it always be available? Certain labels/releases are

I think about those questions, but I always have to pass on so may good records because I never have enough money

Fair enough - that's a very philanthropic way to buy records! As someone who's involved in running a small independent trance label, I can only applaud that sort of thing!

Seriously though, I like your logic here. If you're a DJ, part of your role is to educate as much as entertain and if one of the reasons you buy records is to expose people to new producers then I reckon you're doing a pretty good job as a DJ.

yeah i'd agree with that. if i have to choose...i'll usually buy the quality obscure record over the hottest hit simply because i know i'll be able to get it anytime i want...

Absolutely. There's almost no good record stores in Chicago for trance, so when I get the rare opportunity to hit decent record stores when visiting family, I always go for the more obscure title that I might like. I think theres 10 copies each of the latest Tiesto or PvD tracks on vinyl for every other trance record in this city. Plus you always know you can find the more popular tracks somewhere online if needed.

Granted sometimes you buy a dud, but I consider it well worth it when finding some quality rare vinyl in the used section for $3. Nothing better than going to discogs and discovering that you found a misplaced old remix of Bjork with only a few copies in print.
