We Don't Suck and Rinse It Present: We Don't Suck 11
Friday January 21st, 2005

There are several things that generally come into a person's mind when they hear the phrase "We Don't Suck" and none of them usually deal with music. So in our ongoing effort to change this terrible oversight we're presenting another of our Techno (and now House, Breaks, UKG and D'n'B) nights, hopefully it will be appealing enough to get some people out who usually hibernate this time of year.

I feel to properly present, explain, discuss and show off this months jam I should go back to my Q and A format. Not only does it serve to convey the information in a completely accurate and insightful manner but it also makes me grin.

(*note: the last time I did this an Alert Reader felt the need to point out it was all written by me and it was silly. I agree.)

Q
I hear that We Don't Suck is no longer a free night, is this true?

A
If I told you "Yes" I would be lying, so the answer is of course "NO". Our door policy is a very flexible and lenient one though. We trust that the people who come out to We Don't Suck nights care enough about it to support them with a $3 cover which is divided at the end of the night between all the people who were kind enough to play for us. But if you choose not to pay you can simply utter the magic phrase "I wish to cheat tonight and not pay". You'll be let in with no questions asked, we trust that you have a very good reason to do so and will not doubt the veracity of it.

Q
That's fair, where do you guys host this quirky little night of yours? Is it cozy and inviting?

A
We've been allowed to use The Labyrinth Lounge for 10 of 11 of our ngihts so far and at the present time we see no end in our use of it. The Labyrinth Lounge is located at 298 Brunswick Avenue in Toronto, which is about two blocks west of Spadina along Bloor. If you see the Future's Bakery on the corner then you've found it as The Labyrinth Lounge is directly attached to Future's.

And yes. It is cozy and inviting but that's just my opinion. I also think sticks of Cheddar Cheese and Nutella spread go good together so do your own math on that one.

Q
You like to talk alot don't you?

A
I've been known to blabber.

Q
What kind of music would I hear if I were to venture out to a We Don't Suck night?

A
That is a very good question! Alot of people tend to not go to certain events because they believe it doesn't cater to their genre needs. We Don't Suck was originally a Techno oriented night but in the last few months we have expanded our offerings and have opened up our second room. The second room was given over to our friends at Rinse It Productions. The Rinse it crew plays and books UK Garage, Drum'n'Bass, House, Breaks and whatever else fits in neat and tidy like.

Q
Cool! So you have 2 rooms and multiple (wicked) genres! Is there anything eslse you think I should know about the music?

A
Well I could mention that more often than not the evening's Dj Sets are recorded and they are later available for download but I wont because my Minidisc Recorder is in the shop getting repairs done.

Q
Do people dance at these or is it more of a loungey affair?

A
That's the beauty of The Labyrinth lounge it has a dance-floor that definitely gets it's fair share of use but it also has a seperate area (where you can still hear music of course) with couchs and other amenities that people use to socialize and drink.

Q
That's good to know, I like to dance but sometimes you just need to sit down you know?

A
I know.

Q
Who do you have playing at this particular night?

A
Well due to popular demand (read: a few people asked) we are keeping the Techno room alive with only We Don't Suck's two Techno Residents. The residents usually either open or close each night so that they're Guest Dj's can have the better time-slots, this means that for them to be seen or heard you have to show up early or stay late...people don't like that I guess.

Techno Room:
Stewart Douglas
Trevor 'isoprax' Wilkes

The Rinse It room on the other hand has it's usual staple of talented Dj's playing their usual assortment of Funk and Sock Hop Bebop or House, Breaks, D'n'B and UKG as other people call it.

Rinse It Room:
Deepsix
Charade
Capro
Circe

Q
Wow, I can't believe all that you've told me is 100% correct! If I'm in my right mind at all the day this is taking place I would be there wouldn't I?

A
I find it hard to argue with you on that one.

Q
So is that all you can tell me?

A
Yes, for now. I'm bound to think of other things to add later and by later I mean after my next cup of coffee.
