hey peoples.

i have been thinking about this for some time now but i would also like to know what you TAs think of this matter. As all of you know, there is a crowd of people around the globe that do not like Trance, House, Prog, DnB, Psy, etc. I live in hawaii so i know what it is like to have people around you that dont like "our" kind of music. So i started thinking about what those darn people have heard to make them dislike Electronica so much. As time went by i realized that there is a lot of cheesy tech goin around which could make a lot of people say that techno (they think that techno is the whole entire genre of electronica including all those sub-genres) is bad. They hear the tracks off of DDR (dance dance revolution; a game with the four step pads on which u have to follow the foot pattern)and since most of those tracks are cheesy, they think that the entire genre is some sort of stupid crappy thing. They haven't even listened to the whole package on whether to determine if EDM sucks or not. So i basically think that the reason why people dont like EDM/Techno in their language, is because they have only heard the cheesy stuff and not the great ass woopin tracks that we all know about . so this is my opinion on why a lot of people dont like EDM.

Kid, your imagination runs wild...

The "dance dance revolution" is just an extreme and has nothing to do with the fact that people think that there's only 'bad' EDM in this world. It's the same with extremes like in the style: Nu-metal, which has "Linkin' park" reaching out with its neck

I don't think it solely rests on their exposure to cheesey or quality tunes. I think it really comes down to individual preferences and willingness to hear new music.

For most people music means pop. Right now pop has a pretty wide range from Avril Lavigne to Eminem to Shania Twain.

Pop is a form of music that is designed to put all the emphasis on the vocals. With a focused emphasis on the Chorus portion of the vocals.

The drums, the guitars, the synths, everything is there to support the lead singer.

So i've heard 10,000 songs growing up, and all of them are like this. My brain will get acclimated to the idea that this is what music is supposed to be like.

Then I find "Electronic" music and i don't get it. It's too much of a shift away from the ChorusCentric pop music i've heard all my life.

My brain wants to hear lyrics... my brain wants to follow those lyrics as they tell the story of the song. I want to hear Avril Lavigne tell me the story of how she's not going to get her "Happy Ending" or whatever.

Take away these elements and the average listener doesn't know what to do. Dirty Bass got it right... Trance is about visiting an "Emotional Landscape", a very different kind of story telling...

Subey hit it on the spot. I have a couple friends who are the same way. I will sit there and listen to my music and they complain about the lack of lyrics. I just tell them that they should just sit back and feel like they are being takin on a journey. But you also interpret it however you like. You create your own journey instead of Jay-Z telling you "how it is". Trance is a very emotional type of music and I think takes time to get used to because it isnt put out by mass media like all the other genres.

When I think of EDM, I think of a song that stands up without vocals. Such as 4 Strings - Turn It Around, Oceanlab - Satellite
Only a few "pop" songs can do that, namely Britney Spears - Toxic (but isn't this almost EDM?)

I think what most people think about cheese, it's either songs like DJ Sammy - Heaven (or as most of the board tell you, anything from him) or songs that's mostly pop Europe dance songs, like O-Zone, where it's almost like American pop influenced by EDM...

A few legit trance songs does border the cheese side though, such as DJ Tiesto - Just Be or Armin van Buuren - Burned with Desire, but I'd say they're mostly trance...

I have played some of my trance cds for people who like other kinds of music. Their biggest complaint is "it is just the same thing over and over". Unfortunatly, they can't see the progression, or the addition and subtraction of intruments. I openly admit to my "peers" that I am into electronic, they laugh and snicker at the dance moves, but I don't care because I'm graduating high school in June and will be going to pharmacy school, away from those morons. They have no idea of what they are missing.

What got me interested in electronic music was the voice maskinging in "Days go By" by Dirty Vegas. I was then all into mainstream mixes by various trance artists. Now I'm into underground trance and just starting to get into techno. I find that I like no words in my music. The words generally don't help a trance track, and sometimes end up by destroying it. The sounds of electronic music can much more effectivly convy a meaning, feeling, or attitude than any vocal can. Plus, I like the adrenaline rush that accompanies a good trance track .
