I've recently bought some second hand turntables and I'm very protective of some bits of my vinyl, so I really don't want to damage them. Is there any way of checking whether the stylus is damaged at all; and can a damaged stylus ruin your records? Also, these tables are straight arm, and I've heard that they can also damage your vinyl due to design principles, etc. Is there any way I can adjust it to stop this? Thanks very much!

A damaged stylus could scratch your record but thats about it. Straight tonearms will be ok otherwise they would'nt make them, make sure your weights are set correct and your ready to go.

To test em out get an old record which you don't use much or one you bought and now you hate (we all have one lol) and blast away on that if you see or hear any difference after get some new stylus.

Actually, straight tonearms CAN damage vinyl more than s-tonearms do. As for the stylus, you can't really tell if it's warn out at times, so its much better to replace it every year or so. Anyways check this article out:
