Cool new subway system! (wishful thinking for the TTC, lol)

maybe this is repost, I dunno.

it's obviously a pipedream...and I'm not going to attempt to analyze the logic behind this design...but imagine how different our city might be with this sort of public transportation infrastructure!

Half of those lines would be unnecessary. Maybe when the city's population triples it would make sense to expand on the system so much.

The potential for clearing up the roadways is enormous with this kind of transit system.

But then again, something like this would only be implemented much later when we're super-populated.

stockholm has something like that if not more, with half the population

so its not impossible and definitely not unnecessary!

People don't seem to get it... our population is ALREADY triple what our city is actually designed to handle. Given our population, that is exactly what our subway system *should* look like!

If our population tripled, then the subway would need to expand well outside Toronto itself and into the Mississauga/Markham/Vaughan/Bramptom areas (i.e. the whole GTA) and look more like the New York City subway system:

To belabour the point, I'm curious as to why we all depend on the TTC to expand the subway.

I realize that subways cost a bloody fortune, but so do a lot of businesses. Are subways as a concept so unprofitable that no private enterprise would be interested in building one? Or are there government regulations that prevent them from doing so? Or is it simply an idea that no one has thought about trying yet?

I'll bet a lot of people would pay double or triple fares to get on a north/south subway in the east and west ends - or an east/west subway up in Vaughan or along the King/Front/Gardiner area. It's just too bloody impossible to get anywhere by car down there, and you'd probably end up paying more for parking and gas anyway.

Plus there are days like today when only crazy people (like me) actually want to drive. Most sane people take the subway if they can.

first they have to change the time of the subway to run later and earlier. and more people have to learn to use transit. why expand if people are still too used to their cars.

That logic is patently incorrect. People are used to their cars because the public transit system is garbage, NOT the other way around.

I know how to use transit. I used to take the TTC to and from work every day - it was an hour-and-a-half trip minimum, both ways, so that wasted 3 hours of my day if not more. And it cost $4.50 per trip - that's $45 a week, MUCH more than I pay in gas!

No sane person would willingly take the TTC under such circumstances unless they couldn't afford a car. But I'd happily leave my car at home and take public transit if I could take the Yonge line up to Vaughan and take, say, a Highway 7 or Langstaff line to Weston.
